savings should be ‘need based’ and NOT ‘greed based’…Zardari, Nawaz et el are also saving but for the next 200 generations.

for instance, medical needs in India require you to save a ‘big chunk’ of money, shaadi byaah requires substantial savings and last but not the least education expense related savings are a must. Indians have to save a large amount based on their needs in the future. and oh yes, some money for retirement as well.

on the other hand, in Canada, we don’t need to save for these expenses. we have free health care, free/government funded education, shaadi byaah is less expensive.

we need very little savings for our needs [at least in the near future]. we also don’t ‘HAVE’ to save money for retirement as well because seniors get good amount of pension and old age security.

i hope you get my point.

But do you think that people consider all these things while spending. If they think over such matters, we don’t see extravagance. People in our part of world probably spend out of compulsion (including show off), but people in west also spend beyond needs at occasions like at the time of bumper sales during Xmas, etc.
