Re: Khuda Ke Liye (threads merged)
Shehnaz (Sheikh) Seerat...lives in Lahore. She runs an Advert Company with her hubby Seerat..by he name of KARGAR. I posed the same question on Shenny when I last met her at Lahore during Basant. She said she doesn't have time besides she has lost the knack of acting as well. I agree that she was one of the BEST talent Pak Showbiz has ever produced and boy!!! what grrrreatt time we had recodring UN KAHI..and so sweet are the memories that sometimes I get in a total blue mood when I think of my dearest buddy Jimmy (Jashed Ansari) and Saleem Nasir (who played Mamoon's role) not to forget the duo; Late Mohsin Ali and Shirin Khan...the Executive Producers. In my book I am writing on the history of PTV Serials and Dramas of YESTERYEARS...he cast of UN KAHI, UNCLE URFI and KHUDA KI BASTI (in which I got the best suporting actor award in 1970) will have many pages and photos.
On KHALIDA RIYASAT....she was a magic girl!! a real darling to all. An incredible performer--who made her debut in Bakhtiar's "NAAMDAAR" (1975) with Shakil and me as stock artiste with her. She was a wonder of all. Truly an amazing personality in caste and creed. A GRRREATTT artsite by all counts.
In 1981, I was lucky to be casted by Kamal Ahmed Rizvi (ALLAN) for his series "AAP KA MUKHLIS" with ROOHI BANO from Karachi Centre of PTV. It was great to work with this BORN Artiste. Later I did "GHORA GHAAS KHATAA HAI" with her at Lahore Studios direced by Sikandar Shahen. ROOHI after some seismic problems on her health, is gradually recuperating and should be back on your tube soon...though I cant, at this stage, say whether she'll be same Roohi Bano we remember or a changed one.

wow, thank you for the update on Shehnaz Sheikh sir. this is the first piece of news about her in the longest time.
it's too bad that she doesn't want to act any more. if you run into her again, please convey to her the good wishes of her many, many fans. her fans (like me) still haven't forgotten her. I was a kid when I saw Tanhayian (was one of the first plays I saw) and ever since, I've been in love with Shehnaz. she is a tremendous, tremendous artist. and we all miss and love her. I hope I have a chance of meeting her once and telling her how much she's meant to her fans. I always joke with family that I will be the one to get Shehnaz out of her self-imposed retirement.
regarding the book, I think it's a brilliant idea. it will be a treat for PTV drama fans like me. I assure you that I will be buying a copy. so, please complete it soon and post here when it is out in the market. would love to get my hands on it.
Unkahi, Uncle Urfi and Khuda Ka Basti (the original - not the terrible remake on Geo) are some of my favourite plays especially Unkahi. Saleem Nasir was hilarious in that play. in my book, he ranks as Pakistan's greatest actor. he had tremendous range. I had difficult believing that it was Saleem Nasir when I saw him play Captain Sarwar Shaheed in Nishan-e-Haider. it was such a radical departure from Mamoon in Unkahi and Akbar in Angan Terha. he was a giant amongst us mere mortals. it's sad that he had to leave us so soon. it's true when they say that the best of us leave early - too early.
many giants of Pak drama have left us in recent times including Jamshed Ansari, Subhani Bayounis, Azra Sherwani, Mohsin Ali. I read Hasina Moin's tribute to Mohsin Ali when he passed away - it was very touching and sad. I'm not sure if these artists know about much we (the awam) really love these artists and when they leave this world, it feels like a very dear friend, a part of us has left us.
I have Khalida Riaysat's Parosi (probably one of her last plays) on DVD. she was a virtuoso performer. one of the very, very best that Pakistan produced. similarly, Roohi Bano - one of the very first plays I saw was a long play starring Roohi Bano, Khursheed Shahid, Firdos Jamal and Tauqeer Nasir. it must have been almost twenty years ago now but I still remember it clearly because it struck me in a way few things have. it was a shock to hear of Roohi's illness and then her son's sad demise when you consider how many people absolutely adore and love her. how can people who are loved so much by so many suffer so much?
I have a dream to one day open a center of excellence for performing arts (like NAPA) and dedicate it to the memory of my heroes like Saleem Nasir, Shehzad Khalil, Khalida Riyasat, Subhani Bayounis, etc. these people and their memories deserve a lot more respect than what they are given. we are ever ready to celebrate ordinary outsiders but forget our own giants and heroes. maybe I'll be able to rope in Shehnaz to be involved with the center in some capacity. :)
lastly, please post here when your book is completed. I'd love to buy a copy as I'm sure would many other Pakistanis. the plays you mentioned form the golden age of Pakistani drama and many of us treasure and miss those days. that time period was magical and very little of it is documented. it needs to be documented and preserved because it was the height of artistic excellence. we are lucky to have witnessed art of that quality on our screens.
thank you for your time and posts. they are much appreciated. :)
