But the liberal elite is a misnomer. We aren’t really liberal. We want the liberal values of free speech and rule of law, without wanting to instil the economic and democratic mechanisms to ensure them. We espouse liberalism but don’t practice the egalitarian values — distribution of power and wealth — that underpin liberalism.

This part stood out for me. Like firenze here, we pride ourselves on being liberal while blaming all the mullahs and the extremism for the failings of Pakistan. Over a cup of Gloria Jeans coffee we bemoan our intolerant qaum and our useless leaders. Being liberal in Pakistan only means being non-religious and therefore ‘tolerant’. The ‘liberals’ do not care if their wealth, privileges and status in society have come as a result of robbing the nation and its poor. We don’t pay our taxes, we use references to land the jobs of more deserving people, we use our high contacts to land the lucrative business opportunities.

George speaks the blatant and bitter truth. His words hurt more in the aftermath of Shahbaz Bhatti’s murder. Really sad and personally I see no coming back for Pakistan, although with the tiny shred of patriotism I have left I will keep hoping otherwise.

Well I will keep you in mind as a possible candidate nevertheless when the revolution kicks off we will need all the help we can get and the premiership is still there for whoever wants it… I just want the role of Marshal/Defence minister?.
