Khewra Salt Mines - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Last year we visited Khewra, 2nd largest salt mine in the world… which is in Chakwal district of Punjab, Pakistan…
In the month of July, it was awfully hot outside, but inside the mine, it was so pleasant, felt like a large number of air conditioners are keeping the place cool. Amazing ventilation, even deep inside the mountain, we did not feel suffocated at all…

Water seepage from the mountain, there are many shapes like this one inside the mine

Water pools… our guide told that the water in these pools has very high content of salt that one cannot drown in them, just like Dead Sea, or even more than that…
Nice pictures. The mine is worth visiting especially in summer because the weather inside the mine is very cooler, just like air condition. I have been to khewra couple of times. First time with family in July 2008 and then again after 3-4 days with a friend. LOL. I was in Lahore and another friend came to Lahore from Karachi and he wanted to see khewra too so it resulted in 2 trips to khewra in less than a week.
Also the salt lamps sold by the vendors outside the mine are beautiful and I ended up buying 10 for myself and as gifts for friends & relatives. I’ll post some pictures of these..
Sufi: yeah those are beautiful, my cam was discharged while coming back : D so couldnt take any pics of those souviniers, we also bought a couple of them, but had to hand them to a friend in pindi as unwanted gift : D as it became extra weight
malik sahab: do go sometime, lest than an hour drive from pind dadan khan, i'm sure you know that
Yes, if ur driving a donkey cart - otherwise its 3-4 miniutes as its just 6 km.
If someone want a great trip here is a great off-road excursion..If ur travelling on the Lahore-Islamabad motorway (Lahore side) take lilla interchange just before Salt range and 20 km later u be in Khewra - u can see teh great salt mine in 2-3 hours.. instead of going back take a road that swings north of the salt mines towards Choa Sedan Shah.. ur for agreat treat as the trip is very scenic.. after crossing the small town u will hit the famous Katas Temples.. spend 1-2 hours there at the lake and temples.. continue for further 20 km and u will hit famous Kalar Kahar Lake.. have tea at PMDFC resort hotel.. u can join the motorway here towards Islamabad.. if ur coming from Islamabad get off at Kalar Kahar Interchange and reverse the sequence.. believe me its worth the experience..
Great photos and write up. The Salt Range is really a magnificent place. When you drive on the motorway from Islamabad to Lahore and you snake through the hills and then finally you see the plains of Punjab below you, i almost feel some sort of history.
I have been to many places in pakistan not Khewra. This year I do plan to do that too!
