I can read a quran and bakhsho it to a non-relative.

This is a very common misconception among Muslims.

plus the sawaab from the fact that I am becoming sadaqa-e-jariya for him (being a good son), will reach him.

That is the only sawab that reaches the dead. The only other thing that helps the dead is Dua.
