Former Punjab CM Beant assassin Tara held in Thailand - Hindustan Times
In a major breakthrough, Jagtar Singh, alias Tara, the dreaded terrorist and one of the convicted key assassins of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, was arrested on Monday in Thailand on specific information provided by the Punjab Police, according to well-placed sources.

Acting on the tip-off, a secret operation was conducted by Indian central agencies in tandem with the Thai authorities that led to the arrest of the self-styled chief of the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) from the house of one Khalat Bari, who had been sheltering Tara at the behest of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), government sources said.

Tara, the long-time fugitive, was on the run since 2004 when he along with other assassins of Beant Singh, namely Jagtar Singh Hawara, Paramjit Singh Bheora and their accomplice Dev Singh, had made a sensational escape from the high-security Burail Model Jail in Chandigarh after digging a tunnel.

While Hawara and Bheora were nabbed, Tara along with Dev Singh of Uttar Pradesh had fled to Pakistan. Dev Singh, police sources say, is living in Pakistan as Lucky Singh.

Tara was one of the masterminds in the assassination of then chief minister Beant Singh by a human bomb in the porch of the Punjab civil secretariat on August 31, 1995. At that time, Tara was an active member of the Babbar Khalsa, a militant outfit he later parted ways with and became chief of the Khalistan Tiger Force.
Tara was arrested in 1996 and sentenced along with Hawara and Balwant Singh Rajoana for the Beant Singh murder.
Tara, the police sources say, had been hiding in Pakistan for the past several years. In June last year, Punjab Police got information that he was living in Thailand under a fake identity and on a Pakistani passport as Gurmeet Singh, son of Kaka Singh. Since then Punjab Police were trailing him.
In September, the Punjab Police team camped in Thailand for three weeks and later in November another police team was sent to hunt down the terrorist. However, he went underground and was hiding in the house of Bari, who is said to be a brother of Sultan Bari, a Pakistan-based agent of the ISI, the sources said.
Ever since Tara went underground, the Thai authorities had plugged all escape routes of terrorists.
“Tara is in the custody of the Thailand police. Steps are being taken by Indian agencies to bring him back to Punjab. The operation is the result of pin-pointed information about his hideout given by the Punjab Police to central agencies which coordinated with the Thai authorities,” top government sources said.
When contacted, Punjab director general of police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini neither confirmed nor denied that Tara had been arrested. However, he said: “Maintenance of peace and communal harmony is our first priority.”
Tara’s arrest is yet another success of Punjab Police’s anti-terror operations on foreign soil. The hunt for Tara in Thailand had led to the arrest of Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) chief Harminder Singh, alias Mintoo, and his aide Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi, after the duo were trapped in Thailand in an operation conducted in tandem with central agencies.
In September 2014, the state police had also arrested the ISI-trained Bhindranwale Tiger Force of Khalistan (BTFK) chief Ratttandeep Singh from UP, while in November Ramandeep Singh, alias Goldy, a key operative of the KTF, was arrested from Malaysia.
