Re: Khada Dupatta - Technique
There are two ways to wear a Khada Dupatta; With both pallus on one shoulder OR with one pallu on each shoulder. I personally prefer both pallus on one shoulder as its the traditional style and also gives an overall more classy look. However, with my younger cousins, we do the one pallu on each shoulder because the Khada Dupatta weighs so much that they start complaining if the weight is not evenly distributed.
Most people can wear the Khada Dupatta without any help but if its your first time, ask someone to assist you.
Step 1: Don your Slip, Kurtani and Pajama
Step 2: Fold the Khada Dupatta into half length-wise and step into the semi-circular'ish shape you have created
Step 3: There should be a 12 inch patch where there is no gota work, no masala -- this is the half way point, tuck this into your pajama and if you feel like it may slip out; secure with a safety pin!
Step 4: Take the left pallu and pleat it (like you would for a sari) and place it over your left shoulder ..
Step 5: Take the right pallu and pleat it and place it over the left pallu (that you had placed on your left shoulder)
Step 6: Secure it with a safety pin!
Step 7: Look pretty, party hard and take pictures! :D
I hope that helps. If it's not clear enough, let me know and I'll PM you an instructions video I made for my friend.

Re: Khada Dupatta - Technique
Ok the above instructions are more then sufficient, but i gotta add one teeny-weeny suggestion which is that while u are tucking the duppatta at the back of your pyjama you should adjust the length of the duppata so that it doesn't trail behind....Also u need HUGE safety pins to pin the dupatta, nearly 3 inches long ones.
Re: Khada Dupatta - Technique
i am really sorry but i googled what the would look like and its the most ugliest way to wear a dupatta!!! ![]()
Re: Khada Dupatta - Technique
Of course you have a right to express your personal opinion
But not only have Hyderabadi women (in India and abroad) been wearing the dupatta this way for decades but its a look that’s emulated by brides and party goer-s who have no connection with Hyderabad .. It’s considered a classic piece; just like the gharara, the angharka, the chooridaar, et cetera

Lovely instructions. I'd just like to add -- Please wear your heels before you start fixing your Khada Dupatta!
Re: Khada Dupatta - Technique
:( sorry i didnt mean to hurt anyone.....but personally i jst do not like it!!! but peace out to everyone who wears it :D
Re: Khada Dupatta - Technique
Thank you everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really appreciate the steps...I saw some online and tried to youtube videos but nothing came up.
One more question: how would I do it if I was fixing this on the bride? The dupatta has apparently been designed in a way where there is enough material to go on the head.
I tried it today according to the steps above and I got it but the ghoonghat part is confusing me now :(
The khara dupatta is not a typical dupatta...its a very traditional piece and many times an heirloom that is passed on.
Re: Khada Dupatta - Technique
Reha, when my mom, mamis and khallas wore their Khadda Dupattas at their weddings, they wore separate ghoongats over their heads instead of pinning the actual khaada dupattas over their heads
Khada Dupatta - Technique
Wow i just googled this and definantly looks complicated but pretty.! I want one.! The instructions have made me dizzy already lol
Re: Khada Dupatta - Technique
One of my brides…she says the dupatta is long enough for the ghoonghat. But I tried it today and its not draping properly when its on the head. Both sides are supposed to have a long draping effect but when I put it on top…one side becomes shorter. Its not really sewn in then is it?
Two of my BFFs are Hyderabadi but neither one knows what I am talking about ![]()
Re: Khada Dupatta - Technique
Uploader not working for me today :S Was trying to post a picture
Re: Khada Dupatta - Technique
@Reha-first let us know if u are draping the dupatta on 1 shoulder or 2 shoulders?
For 2 shoulder draping, A ghoongat is must.
For 1 shoulder draping, there is the same shoulder drape which is longer and can be utilised as a ghoongat, U’ll have to adjust the borders in such a way that it becomes easier to take the same shoulder drape as a ghoongat i.e u’ll have to pin it a lil over the shoulder.
Also the end of this drape will come just around the head so its better to pin it to the hair with a simple hijab pin or a juda pin and tell your bride to hold the free corner(looks very becoming, gives the bride a very sharmili look:wub:)**
Hope this helps :)**
Re: Khada Dupatta - Technique
Ray Ray, the last time anyone in my family wore a Khadda Dupatta was 1992, so yea, I wot be if much help either, lol! ![]()
Re: Khada Dupatta - Technique
@em2san - Good thing u brought up wearing d heels first! i totally frgot abt tht part! and its really important cuz if u wear ur heels aftr d whole dupatta is draped,it'll become too ooncha frm behind n spoil d whole look..
@ Reha, out of d 2 pallus,u can try making one longer,n drape tht on d dulhan's head....Good luck!
Re: Khada Dupatta - Technique
^ Im gonna try it again, thank you!
When I draped it, I did it on one shoulder…where you see three panels of work on the left.
Now I am wondering if I can get a ghoonghat out of the dupatta if I drape it on two shoulders? Also, if I make one side longer than the other…I run the risk of exposing the part of the dupatta where there is no work, right?

Re: Khada Dupatta - Technique
ummm I think its not possible to get a ghoongat when u drape KD on both shoulders ![]()
and also i think if u make one side longer then another, u’ll have to tuck the gota part which ummm can be a tad bit uncomfortable for the bride:p aaaand u run the risk of exposing the un-gotaed part of the KD ![]()
