Keyboard Problem

This is a weird issue but as you all have come up with great solutions before, I am sure you’ll help me out on this one as well as I am out of ideas. I am sure you all know what operating system etc. I am using as I’ve been asking a lot of questions :hehe: but for those who don’t, I have an HP laptop with attached number pad and the operating system is Vista.

It was fine before I had to reinstall windows (Remember my copying disc issue when the genius help desk asked me to mess up with the registries and I ended up deleting stuff that should not have been deleted?). Well, after I formatted the computer, when the number lock is off (light off), all is fine. All letters work the way they should. HOWEVER, when the number lock is on, this is what I get when I type some of the letters:

A B C D E F G H 5 1 2 3 0 N 6 * Q R S T 4 V W X Y Z

The right hand keys start typing numbers. Per the help desk suggestion, I uninstalled the keyboard driver and reinstalled it. I also updated the BIOS but that did not help either.

Anyone knows what may be causing this and how to fix it?

Re: Keyboard Problem

Seems like an *incompatibility *issue...

What kind of keyboard is it? What kind of number pad?

Re: Keyboard Problem

Press Fn and Num Lock keys together.

Re: Keyboard Problem

JL It's a laptop; The keyboard is not separate.

WiseGuy Do I have to press and hold it? Because just pressing it once turns the number lock off and everything is fine (which we already know) and when I press it again, the number lock is on again and the problem is still there.

Re: Keyboard Problem

Try updating the motherboard drivers?

Re: Keyboard Problem

I updated the keyboard driver only, I don’t wanna touch anything else unless I absolutely have to. I don’t feel like re-installing the windows for 5th time :bummer:

Re: Keyboard Problem

What would updating drivers for a motherboard that belongs to the system do? Try it, thats the only way to rule this solution out.

Post screen shot of the DEVICE MANAGER?

Re: Keyboard Problem

Ok, dumb question, but it's not in the device manager, do I have to update individual drivers or what?

Re: Keyboard Problem

It looks like it. When you reinstalled windows, did you install the package of drivers for notebook hardware? There should be drivers and software for each piece of hardware thats attached to the notebook.

Re: Keyboard Problem

When num lock is on .. its a normal behaviour of laptop's keyboard, why do u think its problem?

Re: Keyboard Problem

Shikra, that's not a problem, that's by design. When you turn the num lock on the keys in the middle act like a number pad (like the number pad on a 101 keyboard). It should even have little numbers at the bottom of the keys. This is a big duhh for all those trying to help this dude solve the "problem".

Re: Keyboard Problem

Here are the keys that turn into numbers:
0 = M
1 = J
2 = K
3 = L
4 = U
5 = I
6 = O
7 = 7
8 = 8
9 = 9
+ = /
- = ;
* = P
/ = 0

Re: Keyboard Problem

It came with only 1 recovery CD and I installed everything on it.

May be I said it in the opposite way. Let's put it this way: When the number light is on, the alphabetical keys start typing numbers but they should NOT. When the number light is off, all keys work fine and type letters only.

Yaar tofi baba, that's the thing: No numbers are typed on those keys and this "problem" wasn't there when I bought this computer 3 months ago. It only happened when I recently reinstalled the windows. If it wasn't a problem, the help desk lady would've mentioned it, instead of asking me to uninstall and reinstall the drivers, right?

Re: Keyboard Problem

keyboard kooray mai phenk do yaar , aik ebay say nayi lay lo, tum nay to khap hi daal di hai

Re: Keyboard Problem

Recovery CD? Oh man...

Download the drivers from HP's website, for each component. Use the *auto detect *feature if you have to.

Re: Keyboard Problem

Once again, this is not a bug, its a feature!!!! :p
I have used 100's of laptops and this is present on all of the ones I have seen.

Re: Keyboard Problem

If it’s a feature, why does it not stay that way?

Example: Num lock light is on: Everything is fine. keys type alphabets only, numbers type numbers.

Light is off: Everything is fine. Keys type alphabets only, numbers type numbers.
Light is turned on again: That’s when it’s messed up.
Light is turned off again: Everything is fine.
Light is turned on again: Everything is messed up.

This is a very bad feature :naraz: Again, I spoke to someone else last night and they also didn’t mention that it’s a feature. They took it as a problem and asked me to uninstall the drivers and reinstall them, still that way. Now I am never turning the num lock light off, it’ll always stay on. that way everything is fine. if i do it by accident, I am just restarting the darn computer!!

Re: Keyboard Problem

yaa...sell it on ebay...then it wont b ur headche nymore...someone else have to deal with it :D

o boy ur numlock is really giving u a hard time. tell me tell me...is dat new tablet HP ? :D

Re: Keyboard Problem

Shikra keyboard par kissi tumhari purani chahnay wali guppan nay kala jaddu to nahi kar dia. Dekhna usko khol kar kahi koi taveez dhaga na ho andar.

Re: Keyboard Problem

It’s not a PC’s keyboard that I can go sell on e-bay :smilestar: It’s my laptop’s keys. If it was the separate keyboard, I would’ve done what you suggested :smiley:
