I don't know whether Land Reforms were really good for country in long run. It has led to too much fragmantation of land. Though yes it has given a solid vote bank to communists in Bengal and Kerala both the places...

land reforms were good .....in places like maharashtra ...it worked really well ..... i feel places like Up and bihar might have been better if they had experianced communist idology at least once.
only thing i like about communism is that there is no place for religion ........ no hopeless politics ....

There are always two views. I think land reforms was a short cut to provide social justice to poor... (Land for tiller concept)...

The communist party has to be credited to undertake this grass root improvement. The last time I visited I noticed even the servants childrens going to school as a mission.
But then they royally screwed up the business side of things by beleiving in that stupid socialist policy.
So its a bitter irony and a big crime that inspite of such fantastic social indicators there are no jobs.
Yes - its a great place to visit - Green and clean
And of course - If you love movies some of the great movies are in Malayalam far notches above than the Bollywood stuff in terms of acting and story.

Intersting topic.Discussion about my state in Pakistan forum.
These are some important facts about Kerala.
1.First of all literacy rate of Kerala is not 100%.it is 94%.
2.It is the first state in India to obtain that status.
3.In kerala every body(be it private organisations,Government) gives high preference for education.
4.Total population of Kerala is around 32 million out of which 55% is Hindus and 25% Muslims and remaining christians.
5.Though educationally very much progressed job opportunuties are less in Kerala.The resaon for this is some kind of over poiltics(same like Bngladesh .THe opposition party opposes what ever things the ruling party does)
6.Kerala is first state or country in the world where Communists came to power through legimate election
7.Unlike north India the communal forces(BJP, RSS) does n't have much hold in Kerala.Actually BJP is yet to win a single seat for Kerala Assembly or Indian parliment.
8.As some one told in Malayalam some sensible films are made(unlike the stupid bollywood movies).
9.Another difference with North India is people are not crazy after cricket.They love other sports like Football,VOllyball,Swimming and Athletics(Remmber the greatest athlet that India produced PT Usha is from Kerala)
10.Last but most important point is Kerala is beautifull land with full of rivers,beaches,hill stations,blackwaters and much more.

They're nice people, Southern Indians. They have none of that India-Pakistan hostility that the Northern, hinid or punjabi speakers tend to have.

Im a North Indian. And I can say for all the ones I know and Im sure for most that I don't know, there is none of the so called India-Pakistan hostility. I don't think it even crosses their mind. These are just misconceptions that are spread, majority of the people are peace loving in both India and Pakistan. Some North Indians have relatives on the other side of the border, some lost friends, some have their birthplaces, their histories. Of course you do have your odd case of a rotten egg but that can be anywhere.
And yes, South Indians are a nice lot, educated, cultured, well spoken. Kerela has one of the most advanced educational systems in the country. From what I have heard and read, it is also doing pretty well in terms of low poverty levels, environmental pollution, crime rate as compared to other Indian states.

I wud like to give one more point.In Kerala there is 14 districts.Out of which Malappuram is one district where majority of the population is muslims(I am not sure but there are only 2 districts in India where majority is muslims,other one being in Bengal).The hardline BJP/RSS people accuses Malapuram as Mini Pakistan just bcs of its muslim majority(Their narrow mind).
