DOL DOL, Kenya, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Hundreds of Kenyans who say they were raped by British soldiers or suffered injuries as a result of unexploded bombs want to take the British army to court, their lawyer said.
Britain agreed last July to pay more than $7 million in an out-of-court settlement with 228 Kenyans who said they were hurt or their relatives killed by unexploded ordinance left on practice ranges where the British Army has been carrying out military manoeuvres for more than 50 years.
British lawyer Martyn Day, who represented the Kenyans, told Reuters this week that some 3,500 more people have come forward with similar accusations.
The women say British soldiers attacked them when they were out herding, fetching water, collecting firewood or walking to and from school.
“They were hiding in the bush, their faces were smeared with mud,” said Wangeshi Kiloko, 25 years old. Kiloko, who is now married, could hardly control her anger. She said she was 15 at the time. “They undress you and start laughing like fools.”
Day, who said that in one incident 18 soldiers gang-raped six women who were out gathering firewood, accused British authorities of turning a blind eye to what was happening.
“What we have seen is that they (British soldiers) have thrown out the rule book when they have arrived in Kenya,” he said.
“The British army has known that a series of rapes have been going on here and yet as far as we can see there has been no investigations, no charges pressed, nobody thrown out of the army, nobody sent to prison for what has happened.” Day said. :mad2:
