Kenya "peaceful" protests turn violent

Post-election tension continues in Kenya as opposition party ODM calls for 3 day peaceful rallies.

Today was the first day and police used unnecessary means to contain the protesters.

BBC reporter Karen Allen was covering the Kisumu (opposition stronghold city) rally and had to run mid-sentence when a volley of shots was fired behind her. Later on she asked the policeman in charge Why were you firing bullets at an unarmed crowd? The policeman replied Oh those were not bullets That was tear gas. Looking at the obviously clear smoke-free atmospheres, Allen said But I do not see any smoke here. Why were you firing bullets? He brushed her off saying Well nobody is lying around hurt so there is no problem.

2 people died of bullet wounds in Kisumu.

CNN’s Zain Verjee (originally from Kenya herself) was hit on the back while covering the Nairobi protests.
