Do you think its important to keep oneself updated of the happenings around us in the business world? Like news of what’s happening in other companies in the market? no matter what industry they belong to.
How do you keep yourself updated? and what kind of info do you look out for in order to keep yourself up to date in this respect?

It is important in general. Importance can vary by function/level/role.
1- conferences, industry webinars, professional associations/groups
2-industry publications, websites, industry blogs, company blogs, social sites - linked in/twitter
3- setting up alerts on keywords
information is on new services, clients/partnerships, movement of key personnel, topics of webinars or topics covered by their speakers in conferences and company thought leadership- blogs, articles, whitepapers.
It sounds like a lot but once you start its simple, conferences etc can get expensive but even if you dont go, some eventually share some content on their site, or the talk topic and abstracts are very telling.

Does one have to keep a budget for subscriptions or invites for seminars or conferences ?
Yes, even if you work for a company and they don't contribute.
In the end it is about investing in yourself. Why wouldn't you?

The easiest and most fun way (IMO) is networking. Start by building a circle with people from different sectors/industries and with them share developments in your fields, IPO's, mergers and acquisitions, and they will share such information with you too during informal discussions. Additionally follow Business Recorder on twitter/fb.
Thats what I do, and it gives me a lot of info.

I guess I need to take advice from all you guys and start investing in myself professional growth rather than bollywood gossip.
