Keeping jewelry and valuables safe, esp. around wedding season?

I dont understand why so many families in Pakistan and even outside of Pakistan keep so much jewelry at home. My fiance’s khala, along with her family and husband, were robbed at gunpoint in their ISB home in broad daylight, and the robbers took 50 tola worth of gold (!!). The family is beyond devastated and wrecked b/c the gold wasn’t just my fiance’s khala’s, it was gold that belonged to her daughter-in-law (who was away staying at her parents’ place for a few days) and also the gold she had saved/bought for her daughter (my fiance’s cousin) who was going to get married next year.

What usually happens in cases like this? Obviously my fiance’s family is going to take care of the jewelry for her now but what do people usually do in these cases? And please tell me you guys do NOT keep such huge amount of jewelry at home and hopefully keep it in a safe at the bank or something along those lines.

I feel horrible for them.

:(
My mother keeps her jewelry in the bank.. she keeps a few everyday things and some artificial jewelry at home.

Re: Keeping jewelry and valuables safe, esp. around wedding season?

Same, my parents are the same way. We keep all that at the bank, always have.

I just cant get past 50 tola divided amongst 4 women for personal/wedding/future use and it being gone just like that. So horrible.

Not making up or trying to scare, but these days even some of the bank managers and cashiers are part of robbers team at least in Karachi.

may be their homes are protected by ADT and contents insured thru home insurance. Insurance companies require you to keep your valuables in the safety deposit boxes...if somethings unfavourable happens and the jewelry is stolen, the desis say they had brought the jewelry home for use in a party and it was stolen before they could return to safety boxes...they get their money! :D

Re: Keeping jewelry and valuables safe, esp. around wedding season?

How would they rob it, you need two keys to open a locker?

Re: Keeping jewelry and valuables safe, esp. around wedding season?

And everyone I know keeps their jewelry in a bank as do all sane people.

I don't think its that easy man, remember, the Insurance companies are Desi too :p

Re: Keeping jewelry and valuables safe, esp. around wedding season?

Desis are 'smarter than the goras...modus oper.andi was: desi man would buy a million dollar life insurances on his wife and then would sent the wife to India/Pakistan for a trip and a few months later he would report to the local police in Canada/USA/Europe that his wife died in a road accident and would produce a fake death certificate...the insurance company would pay a million dollar n death benefits :D the wife would later join her husband using a passport in another name...hai na smart? :D

Re: Keeping jewelry and valuables safe, esp. around wedding season?

in Pakistan i've heard, houses where a wedding is taking place is more likely to get robbed. At mine and my sister's wedding, the family didn't allow any fancy lighting or decorations until the last minute, and the jewellery stayed at the bank until the last minute. Better be safe than sorry

Re: Keeping jewelry and valuables safe, esp. around wedding season?

good grief ... 50 tolas !!!!!!!!!

and with today's gold rate and it's gonna be a killer to replace it !!!!

we keep ours in the bank, always have and always will. We have a small "tijoori" at home as well, incase it needs to brought for Diwali or other functions.

Here in Bahrain soo many Indian ( mostly Kerala households ) houses have been robbed coz ppl know desis keep gold at home.

One of the friend's uncle's house got robbed 3 times and the last time they stole the family passports as well.

My best friend's house was also robbed all her mother's jewelry which was saved for my friend's wedding was gone too. Her mother was in shock. Didn't eat or talk to anyone of like 3-4 days. But this was 5-6 yrs ago when gold rate was still reasonable and they quickly started buying more for her wedding !!!

Other than the monetary value, wow phew we have a lot of heirloom pieces from our naani, if something were to ever happen to it i would be devastated.

Re: Keeping jewelry and valuables safe, esp. around wedding season?

OMG! 50 Tolas  Ouh :bummer:.

This is not only loss of so much money but this is likely gonna stay on the family’s mind n end up ruining their wedding celebrations too :frowning: So damn sad.

Re: Keeping jewelry and valuables safe, esp. around wedding season?

Exactly^

And what I meant by:

was that my fiance's cousin is also his future bhabhi (the upcoming wedding is his brothers) so now they are talking about buying all the gold themselves and rightfully so, although it will be super expensive.

Re: Keeping jewelry and valuables safe, esp. around wedding season?

I don't take gold jewelry to Pakistan any more.

In the US my jewelry stays in the locker, unless needed.

Re: Keeping jewelry and valuables safe, esp. around wedding season?

Ohhh! FYI, We have lockers here in Pakistan too :bummer:.

Re: Keeping jewelry and valuables safe, esp. around wedding season?

^ Right, and if the fact that we're foreign doesn't make us targets, the visits to the bank will.
