Keep a spare key hidden!

So locked myself out of my house yesterday in the freezing cold close to midnight! Did have access to the garage though… Not having a spare key hidden cost me $180 for emergency locksmith, and waiting so long in the freezing cold, though later I got into the car and turned the heater on !! What do you guys do, keep a key under the mat?

We put the spare key in the plant pot, the blue one, inside the porch. The only time iv ever been locked out is during the summer of 2007, my cousins dropped me off home after attending a wedding. I was wearing a sari. It was awfully embarrasing. I couldn't even sit down on the wall or owt, I had to just stand there like a muppet for 1.5 hours till my dad made his way home. The drama!

i) Thank you for letting me know where you keep it, don’t be complaining if the ras malayi in your fridge and some of your shoes went missing, mysteriously while you were away searching for monieful hunks.

Since I live in frigid Minnesota, I can empathize with you. I have a portable key safe (similar to the one in the link) in the garage. Definitely worth the price.

i guess my only option is to train my cat to unlock the main door....

what do you guys think how can i train my kitten and how long is it gona take ?

And you most definately cannot borrow the sari, its just not your colour.

I got locked outside once very early in the morning, had gone to drop sister off at school and that too in my spongebob jammies I opened both the locks on house door with a credit card.. and just a few days later, siblings and I were out with friends and when we all got back, we were locked out.. it was late at night, parents were asleep so I told them to try the credit card thingy instead of waking anyone up and they all looked at me as if I had lost it. But when one of the friends tried it, it worked and we all still laugh about it. Of course this time I remembered to tell my parents about it who freaked out and had all the locks changed but again soon after, one night I got locked out and tried opening the door with a CC and it worked. Imagine the horror of my parents. Now they have installed locks that are truly credit card proof Now we all carry house keys on the same chain as our car keys and keep a spare one inside the car dashboard. That has made life so much easier because wherever we go, we’ll be driving so the spare key is always with us.

I have a keypad to get in the garage, and have a house key hidden in the garage. I am thinking of adding a keypad to the door from garage into the home, but have not done it yet.

All our outside doors have double locks one which can be opened using CC the other are deadbolt locks. We do have a keypad on garage door which is usable only during the daylight hours , after dark the deadbolt lock is activated , on the door from the garage into home also so nothing will work in our case if we do not have the key.

WOW ... CC unlocking!! Thanks for giving us the idea, I'll definitely try it (with someone inside home only) :)

But don't do it when you see people/neighbors around. My mom freaked out thinking what if someone had seen me doing it.. you know, neighbors can be crazy :D

omg thats really scary, what kind of locks are those!!!! I got locked out of the bathroom once and could not even get that door opened with a credit card!!!!

^The bottom one was a doorknob kind and the top one was a regular lock.. you insert the credit card in between door panel and the lock, the metal slides inwards and viola, you're no longer locked out :D

^ Husband tried the CC unlocking technique when we were locked out once, it didn't work, in fact it ruined his CC! Does it need practice?

mines is at my parents and they live 5 walking minutes away from me !
