Re: katy perry causes offence
The way I see it, as long as people don’t start riotting and burning things, good for them for speaking against it. Who am I (a person who is just sitting here and doing nothing for whatever reason) to call their petition useless and an embarrassment for the rest of the community.
The least I can do is condemn it in my heart. If others can show their dissaproval in a more active way then more power to them.
Re: katy perry causes offence
Then none of you should be watching it. I hardly ever watch music videos. I watched this video now five times and still didn’t notice the pendant. Where do these people get so much time to notice such little details and then upset over them?
Re: katy perry causes offence
Lack of clarity
People often cannot make a distinction between opinions and facts.
Re: katy perry causes offence
We are just expressing displeasure at a tasteless video.
Most of us don’t think it is a life or death issue.
But we should not feel defensive expressing that displeasure.
Re: katy perry causes offence
Muzna,
Maybe for you my disagreement can only mean venting and frustration and thus warrants embarrassing me in such a sweet and concerned way. I am not frustrated, nor am I venting. Yes, we should always try to better ourselves first, but self-improvement is a continuous and life-long process. Realistically speaking we don’t think that…“Nahi nahi, I have not reached the pinnacle of good character yet…so I will not try to guide my child, my sibling, my friend, or whomever that is doing something wrong. I think maybe in about 10 years time I will have reached the spiritual status/goal I have in mind and only then can I try to guide others, or attempt societal reform, or voice my disapproval of something.” I’m not trying to be sarcastic here…but if you reflect upon human nature and real life…we don’t do one thing at at a time… We don’t strictly take care mastering individual character/ibadat before dealing with others. If that’s the case…then nobody would bother to even guide/help their loved ones let alone strangers because they would be stuck on, “I haven’t achieved my personal spiritual goal yet, so who am I to meddle in others affairs” In real life, people work on improving their own ibadat and character and as well as help/guide others and speak out about things they believe to be wrong.
Oh they are definitely attention-seeking tactics, but I personally, and you may disagree, but I also see them as harmful to society. Just because their tactics have not succeeded with me or even others, doesn’t mean they’re not succeeding at all or that they have no impact at all on society.
And some folks are getting so upset at those who are expressing disapproval as though we are going out in the streets and protesting or resorting to violence. Is voicing disapproval such a bad thing? Does expressing disapproval always have to be met with the response that “Look at your own character/ibadat and work on that first and perfect it before you dare to speak out.” And Muzna who is going to give us the green light or tell us “Okay NOW you have finally achieved perfection in character and ibadat…and NOW you have the right to express disapproval and guide and contribute to the betterment of society.”

This thread reminds of that alcohol thread in life 1, where liberals were generalising non-drinkers with rapists, pedophiles, interest lovers and what not.

I must really be living under a rock because this is the first I am hearing of this. ![]()
Re: katy perry causes offence
Muslims have trivialized the all mighty to a mere word in Arabic. People taking innocent lives in the name of Islam doesn’t get such a reaction from Muslims as these silly antics by entertainers do. That’s really sad. Where is the outrage from Muslims when women are treated like crap in Saudia under pretense of Islam? You don’t hear a peep about that.

Every once in a while, the lady is coherent.
Re: katy perry causes offence
Not sure I follow the logic here. Let me give couple of examples of peoples opinions that SHOULD get decent people heated up:
A politician stating poor kids should clean school latrines to help pay fir free school lunch
Koch Brothers and lackey politucians denying Climste change
Politicians cutting school lunch, Medicaid
Some of above are opinions. Dome resulted in implementation of such opinions.
Damnable right, decent folks should get heated up on such opinions of other.
Re religion I have never signed such petitions concerning my religion.
Re: katy perry causes offence
Re above typos, understandable if some get heated up
Re: katy perry causes offence
from several recent posts its hard to deny the fact that Southie is just Monk’s multi.

Et tu, monsieur?
Re: katy perry causes offence
I am not going to listen to Katy anymore. She just lost a fan.
Re: katy perry causes offence
Would people be just as offended if she had burnt a pendant with the English word for Allah which is ‘God’? If not, why? It’s the same God. I doubt most muslims would care much if it was ‘God’ instead of ‘Allah.’
Are people angry because she disrespected God or that she disrespected the muslim word for God?
Re: katy perry causes offence
I wouldnt have known about this video if you didn’t promote it here.
Re: katy perry causes offence
The question to ask is why did her production team choose to use the Arabic name “Allah”?
I mean we can blame ‘her’ but chances are it was not her … It was a whole project behind that decision.
Re: katy perry causes offence
First and foremost RV, I did not mean to “embarrass” you . I merely expressed my surprise at your sarcasm since I really didn’t find it to be in character. Perhaps I’ve just not been observant enough I don’t know. The intention was to illustrate that there really was no need to approach Cheegum’s comment in the manner that you did. Furthermore it was not your disagreement that perplexed me…it was the manner in which you expressed yourself that I was objecting to chalking up to frustration.
More on the subject itself…I’ve already agreed that we do not live in a vacuum and I agree that we all have a moral responsibility to better our social environment. Having said that, I believe that we need to pick our battles wisely.
In my book “cleaning up society” starts with objecting to near-naked women in Bollywood movies and videos long before this katy perry garbage even comes in to play. But that’s my personal opinion and if someone does not agree with it, I don’t think that they are wrong; they just have different priorities.
As someone has stated…Allah will protect Islam…I need to protect myself, my family, my community, my city, my country…in that order.
One more thing before I’m done in this thread…for a large portion of my life I was not regular in my namaz routine. If I compare my outlook and approach towards such things then and now, then I have to say that I am much more at peace with things and have much more faith that an outward reaction to such displays of idiocy are futile and a waste of energy. (Sort of like an empty vessel makes more noise than one that is full.)
Re: katy perry causes offence
After complaints from Muslims offended one of the images in it, the video for Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse”](MTV | Homepage - Shows & Schedules)
has gotten a scrub. Shortly after theEgyptian-themed
clip debuted, a petition was launched on Change.org that dubbed the clip “highly controversial” because of its “portrayal of blasphemy.”
The offending image comes around 1:15 into the video, when a man wearing a number of necklaces melts into a pile of sand. Before he melts, though, some observers noted that among his chains was one bearing a pendant with the word “Allah” spelled out, which also burns up with him.
