I agree with RedVelvet mostly. I understand some of the backlash is quite aggressive and a little silly, because since when has a petition against youtube really worked. However, it shows through the people commenting here and their whatever attitude that we slowly have become desensitised to the fact they are clearly insulting Islam. Isn’t this what they really want that we stop defending Islam and start detaching ourselves from those who do. Had this been a Nazi symbol can you imagine the uproar, or had it been any other religions symbol? Had it been any other religious symbol I would have still had the same stance.
Not really. People mock Jesus, and make fun of Christianity all the time. Same with Judaism. Comics make fun of Jews stealing land. While some people may be offended they simply ignore the source of offense. Muslims feel the need to start pointless online petitions. What is the purpose? Is Katy Perry somehow going to be made to take this video back?
Show your displeasure in more constructive ways. Have a discussion with your kids. Don’t act like the rednecks of the Islamic world. The same ones who scream that Obama is coming for their guns and re-stock their bunkers when people talk about restricting assault rifles.
Salaam RV, that was a yes / no question We muslims as a community need to get our priorities in order. One has to pray Fajr even if one does not intend on doing anything productive that day.
I agree. By the same token what you can and cannot do could potentially be very different from what you should and should not do. It all depends on your approach. Perhaps Cheegum prefers to check himself before he “judges” the actions of others. We can’t say that his approach is wrong. We can only say that it is different.
Would people here and in the world generally be as broad minded if Ali Azmat was a global rock star and made a video desecrating a cross or a star of David or a menorah etc. ?
^This. Society is not just about the individual…it’s a collective mass. For us to only be concerned about our own homes and actions and not be bothered by what’s happening around us…where’s the sense in that? In that case, let’s not watch the news…let’s not condemn atrocities and injustices…let’s not attempt to help others. Sab bas apnay apnay gharon main raho and confine your ibadat only to your homes because ibadat is only about namaz and especially fajar ki namaz.
No they wouldn’t. When Madonna made a video desecrating the cross a few family groups, and the Vatican condemned the video but the rest of the public loved it, and it did very well critically. Those groups are the nut jobs that exist in every society and unfortunately, are usually well organized.
The difference here is that the majority of Muslims are behaving like the religious nut jobs.
I’m going to chalk that comment up to you being frustrated and venting otherwise it really doesn’t reflect the rational personality and level-headedness we all attribute to you.
To answer your comments…no, we should not isolate ourselves because we certainly do not live in a vacuum. Having said that, we would definitely be further along as an ummah if we did correct ourselves first before seeking out others to condemn.
My personal opinion is that such acts of rebellion are attention seeking tactics and the more we give them what they are looking for, the more likely they are to have succeeded in their efforts.
The sooner we let such things die down the less likely people are to resort to such tactics.
This is such a non issue. You aren’t exactly avoiding another Sodom and Gamorrah. If this angers Allah, let him deal with it. God protects you, you don’t protect him!
On one side I agree this is another Masonic stunt, designed to annoy the Muslims and generate more traffic from the predictable controversy … On the other side … Why are Muslims giving them any legitimacy … By watching it and then complaining to them that they offended … It was designed to generate a reaction and we are playing in to their hands.
They think Allah (SWT) or the one who worships Him is dust? Leave them in their fantasies … When they get the Muslims angry … the Muslims vent it out … It seems to be an effective mechanism for mass psychological control … Note: don’t be controlled … Don’t be enraged … Just supplicate.
Emphasis on priorities. We don’t go down so hard on ourselves missing something that’s fard / obligatory yet we go running about acting all muslim and ghairatmand for everything else. Missing fajr prayer should be a bigger cause for concern than some silly woman rocking a pendant that reads Allah in arabic, which by the way is also used by Arab jews and christians to refer to God.
Yeah, they have nothing better to do. Most likely, they were picking all ancient Arabic looking stuff and probably picked up the Allah pendant because it looked cool. They decided to use it as a prop. I am sure the pendant is doing just fine and still sitting in some drawer.
