Aarakshan (reservation) is set in a north Indian city. It deals with the sensitive and controversial issue of job reservation, epitomized by the violence that followed the implementation of the Mandal commission’s recommendations to reserve a large percentage of jobs for the backward class.

In the film, Bachchan reportedly plays a character inspired by his father, the illustrious Harivansh Rai Bachchan, as a college principal. Ajay Devgan plays his favorite student, who belongs to a backward class and supports the job-reservation.
