Specifically taking kassam - what, if any, significance is there on kassam? Is it allowed? Frowned upon?
Is it a tradition we’ve borrowed from other cultures?
I remember way, way back, in Masjid school days, someone said, or I read somewhere, that The Prophet (SAW) never took kassam?
I may be wrong, so please correct me if I am.
Also, what happens if someone takes a jhooti kassam? Aside from not being able to trusting the person again
And what about those people that pick up The Holy Qur’an to prove their honesty? Isn’t that… bidah?
Or saying 'wallahi"? “Kasmeh!” Or even “Imaan naal/ se”?
And lastly, why do we take kassam to prove what we’re saying/ doing is truthful/ honest/ etc? (this part is more philosophical vs reigious)
These are the verses regarding qasam in Quran…you may find the details of it in tafaseer…
This could be the answer of your last question…
And do not make [your oath by] Allah an excuse against being righteous and fearing Allah and making peace among people. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing. (224)
Allah does not impose blame upon you for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He imposes blame upon you for what your hearts have earned. And Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing. (225) Surah Al Baqarah
Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but* He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths.* So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] - then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be grateful. (89) surah Al maida
i have read ahadith… if i am not wrong that are somethibg like this qasam hy us zaat ki jis k qabzay mein meri jaan hy…Allah forgive me if i am not… sirf Allah hee ki qasam khani chahye if it becomes necessary..
ALLAH knows best!!
I guess some people just say it out of habit without any intention of a real qasm. Like my aunt’s sister used to say it after every sentence, then she grew out of it.
What Tahurra wrote is correct. I’ve always heard from my elders that its not nice to take qasm and if you do, it should be only taking Allah SWT name and no other being and nothing else, including quran and rusool. Wallahu alam.
I did take Allah ki qasm only once, but had to break it to save my nani’s life, (its quite long and verrrry painful story). But nobody blamed me or thought bad of me, in fact everyone was grateful for what i did, as everyone in my family was aware under which circumstances i had taken it and broken it. After that i had to give the kaffarah, so fed 10 people, but also fasted for 3 days in case if the food that i gave wasn’t enough for some of the individuals according to their needs. Wallahu alam and May Allah forgive me.
Never before or after this incident did i take another oath. Even though breaking it saved my nani’s life and made everyone happy in my family and i did pay the kaffarah, but whenever i remember the moment that i had to break it, it makes me feel what i felt at that moment, that i lied to Allah SWT and this thought makes me feel very sad and somewhat fearful. My personal view is taking a qasm should never be taken as lightly, as it is a very big thing that you are committing to.
@ Tahurra … yes there is a hadith where Prophet Muhammad SAW did take an oath, here it is:
عن أبي موسى رضي الله عنه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال "تعاهدوا هذا القرآن فوالذي نفس محمد بيده لهو أشد تفلتًا من الإبل في عقلها". ((متفق عله)).
Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Read the Qur’an regularly. By the One in Whose Hand Muhammad’s soul is, it escapes from memory faster than a camel does from its tying ropes.”
There are 8 hadith books about ‘oath’. I need some time to read them all including some other books. Hope you’re not in hurry for getting answers :insh: will answer shortly.
Asalamo Alaikum Lkk! Not a problem at all! please take your time!
I appreciate you looking into it! No rush, just a general question that came up In between convos.
Pardon me for late reply. It is very wide subject. However, I was able to answers only few questions.
The kassam (oath) is effected by swearing by one of the Almighty Allah’s Names or one of His Attributes**.
Book ‘Oaths and Vows’ of Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 623.
Narrated Ibn 'Umar: Allah’s Apostle :saw2: sent an army detachment and made Usama bin Zaid its commander. Some people criticized (spoke badly of) Usama’s leadership. So Allah’s Apostle :saw2: got up saying, “If you people are criticizing Usama’s leadership, you have already criticized the leadership of his father before. But Wa-aimullah (i.e., By Allah), he (i.e. Zaid) deserved the leadership, and he was one of the most beloved persons to me; and now this (his son Usama) is one of the dearest persons to me after him.”**
**Hadith No. 624
Narrated Ibn 'Umar: The oath of the Prophet :saw2: used to be: “No, by Him who turns the hearts.”
**
**Swearing by other than Almighty Allah is unlawful and it is a kind of shirk. It is worth to mention here that the taking false oath (Ghamus) is a kind of biggest sin. **
Book ‘Oaths and Vows’ of Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 667. Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: The Prophet :saw2: said, "The biggest sins are: To join others in worship with Allah; to be un-dutiful to one’s parents; to kill somebody unlawfully; and to take an oath Al-Ghamus.
**Book ‘The Book of Virtue, Good Manners and Joining of the Ties of Relationship (Kitab Al-Birr was-Salat-I-wal-Adab)’ of Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 6350. Jundub reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) stated that a person said: Allah would not forgive such and such (person). Thereupon Allah the Exalted and Glorious, said: Who is he who adjures about Me that I would not grant pardon to so and so; I have granted pardon to so and so and blotted out his deeds (who took an oath that I would not grant pardon to him).
****According to another Hadith from Abdu Hurairah r.a., the man who said it was a faithful worshipper. Abu Huraira r.a. said “His one statement destroyed his life in this world and there Hereafter”**It is narrated in Ibn Majah with good Isnad that Ibn Umar R.A. narrated that Prophet Muhammad :saw2: said: “Do not swear by your forefathers. Whoever swars by Allah, let him speak the truth. And the one for whom the oath is taken in the Name of Allah, should be satisfied with it, and whoever is not satisfied, is not from the slaves of Allah”.
**Oaths in Arabic called Al-Ayman which is the plural of ‘Yameen’, and the literal meaning of yameen is the (right) hand. And oath became knows as yameen, because when the Arabs swore an oath, each of them would take the hand of the other. **
**In juristic terms, it means to confirm something by mentioning Almighty Allah’s Name or one of His Attributes.
About why taking kassam, I would like to give an example to explain it. If we read comments of hanibal in this thread ****http://www.paklinks.com/gs/pakistan-affairs/654341-pakistan-yemen-and-saudi-arabia-5.htmlat post # 75 then we’ll came to know that hanibal used wording “in Islam” to prove a point, which means by hearing/reading the word “in Islam”, another person surely believe/agree upon his/her point by thinking that is actually mentioned/ordered in Islam. Similar to this in our daily affairs, we need to prove something to others and to do that so, we say “Sachi”, “Imaan nal”, “Kassmay” etc., so to make other believe in what we’re saying is truth. **
