**Australian media trying to find a reson to whine after the defeat. ** I was going through some aussie newspaper online and found out this.
THE AUSTRALIAN
AS if the most compelling Ashes Test of recent times needed a further twist of drama, doubt emerged in the immediate aftermath of England’s landmark two-run win as to whether the final wicket was legitimate.
Enhanced television replays indicated Michael Kasprowicz’s right hand was not in contact with the bat when Steve Harmison’s final delivery brushed his glove on the way through to wicketkeeper Geraint Jones.
Although nobody could justifiably criticise New Zealand umpire Billy Bowden for noticing the technicality amid the flurry of movement and cauldron of pressure that accompanied the final act, it did provide a suitably intriguing end to a memorable game. http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,16185929%255E2722,00.html
THE COURIER MAIL
ONE of the greatest Test finishes of all time had a dramatic twist in its tail last night with allegations that the final dramatic verdict was incorrect.
Heartbroken Michael Kasprowicz slumped to his haunches after umpire Billy Bowden adjudged him caught down the leg-side from a short ball he gloved to keeper Geraint Jones to leave Australia three runs short of victory in the second Test at Birmingham.
But in a development 30 minutes after play, television analysts searching for replays found what they considered to be proof that Kasprowicz had his hand off the bat at the time the ball hit it and therefore should have been given not out.
Re: Kasper dismissal controversial, claimed by Aussie papers
and what about pieterson decision given on the bowling of warne. That was also not out. But we know that Australians are not graceful losers. Its difficult for them to digest a defeat. We may see more of it if england continues to perform well in the series, and that actually is the fun part seeing them whinning. I have been looking forward to see that happening since the beginnning of the Ashes.
Re: Kasper dismissal controversial, claimed by Aussie papers
my first reaction was that Kaspo was certainly not out...........anyway, i think Aus has emerged as the final winner of this test match and it is certainly Australia who will carry the psychological advantage from this test match. Right now England's confidence must be shattered. Aussies have again proved that they can comeback from any stage whereas England must be feeling awful.
Re: Kasper dismissal controversial, claimed by Aussie papers
^ wat??? dude, england was three runs away from the defeat… n they won.. why would their confidence be shattered… with all due respect to aussie comeback… i think england is the one performing against all odds… hurray for their heart… flintoff :k:
Re: Kasper dismissal controversial, claimed by Aussie papers
It appears that kasper was a bit unlucky so were the aussies since the decision was given. Even the BBC have confirmed that it was not glove. But these things happen. Sometimes decision go in favor and sometimes they go against you. The bottom line is that England won and they were the deserving winner.
Phoenix Desi bhai I disagree with you . A loss in such an epic battle could take alot out of a team both physically and mentally. Aussie must be feeling that but a loss for england could have been more disastrous. But with series now levelled at 1-1, england will be reenergized before the 3rd test. If nothing else there confidence will be sky high.
Re: Kasper dismissal controversial, claimed by Aussie papers
There is no doubt about that Ball HIT the glove and deflected. Point of discussion is that when ball hit the glove, his hand was not on bat. So by rules it doesnt qualify as a dismissal.
But Aussies are sore losers for sure. I didnt see them mentioning Pieterson’s atrociuos dismissal. Another half hour from him and Aussies would have been batted out of the game.
There can be so many incident recently when some dogy decisions went aussies way and they won because of that. (Remember Langer decision, Hobart 1999!) But will they mention it ever? NO!!!
Phenox desi– The way England come back after first test mauling was exemplary and the way aussie bowling crumbled in first innings without McGrath is a point to ponder for them so how you claim that English confidence must be shattered is beyond me. Aussies wont be as disheartened I agree but english confidence low? I dont think so!
Re: Kasper dismissal controversial, claimed by Aussie papers
Very well remember that hobrat match. Pakistan was robbed of victory otherwise the result of the series could have been totally different. And we don’t need to go too far. The recent VB series finals were also an example. Even though PCB took a firm stand against the BS umpiring but still no one mentions it because it happened with Pakistan and therefore it is “normal” and part of cricket.
Re: Kasper dismissal controversial, claimed by Aussie papers
Well, we should look into the events of the final session with more depth. When the play on the fourth morning started, everyone including the England players was thinking that they will knock out the remaining two Australian wickets relatively easily. Here comes the mental frailty into the picture. Had the Englishmen obtained the last two wickets relatively easily, it would have given them unquestionable confidence and boost. But in reality, not only the Englishmen failed to get the last two wickets easily but more importantly their bowlers were thrashed all over the place by Aussie’s tailenders who scored at 6 runs per over. How could you say that it did not effect Englishmen’s confidence? In such a tight finish, Australians must be taking a lot of heart from the fact that even their tailenders almost won them a match.
Let me give one more example to make my point. Just imagine if Australia had 9 wickets in hand to score those 107 runs to win. Of course, everyone would have thought that Australia would stage an easy win. Now imagine Australia winning the game but not before losing 9 of their wickets. Who would carry the psychological advantage in that case? Of course England.
Re: Kasper dismissal controversial, claimed by Aussie papers
I did not deny the fact that Australians will take a lot out of this game and will be heavily boosted by their tailender’s fight. But this boost is not inversely propotional to English confidence.
But to say that English confidence is shatterred is bit of an over statement. On last day, aussies kept edging and bowl kept landing in no man’s land. Not once, not twice not thrice but more than that. England did not dismiss them cheaply, fair enough but the way they bulldozed australia on first two days and late third day have given them a momentum. England will know that they were the better team and with some clinical finishing they have the edge with two three factors going their way.
