Drat! Okay, for the next person asking questions, here is what we know so far:
It's not a consumer product, it is not used for medicinal purposes, it is a technology that has been around for more than 20 years and it is found in most homes.
It is not used for entertainment purposes, it is almost always found in the bedroom "too" which would tell me it's found outside the bedroom also. Part of it is powered by electricity/battery and it is NOT a clock/alarm clock.

Some how we need to determine the function of the object.
We know it’s not used for safety, medicinal, energy/power or entertainment purposes - so what other uses could it have? 
Possibilities are personal grooming or communication.
NOT A QUESTION FOR ACES - but what do the rest of you think, could it be a cordless or other type of phone?

hmm I was thinking along the lines of space heater/electric blanket.. but those are consumer products so scratch that (not a guess)
