Is this a sign of Kashmiri youth finally reconciling to the idea of being a part of India ? But why join the army ? There are other Indian jobs that they could try for…just wondering :hmmm:

DAWN.COM | World | Kashmir youth risk lives to join military

BARAMULLA: Last year, Imtiaz Ahmed was marching in some of the biggest pro-freedom demonstrations India has faced in Indian administered Kashmir since the start of an insurgency two decades ago.

But recently he was among 15,000 young men who lined up inside an army-ringed cricket stadium for a rigorous physical exam, hoping to qualify for a job with the Indian military.

Anxious for jobs to help their families in this scenic Muslim-majority region, where unemployment is high due to the revolt which has scared off investors, they were defying militant death threats to join the army.

‘I will try my best to impress the selectors as I need this job desperately,’ bare-chested Ahmed, 23, said as he prepared for the long jump and watched others being put through their paces in the heavily guarded stadium.

‘There are no government jobs and I have to take care of my two sisters and my parents who are growing old,’ he said, smoothing his white shorts nervously ahead of his tryout.

Militants have been waging a deadly separatist revolt against Indian rule in this Himalayan state for nearly 20 years and regard youngsters trying out for the Indian army as traitors to the cause.

They have issued death threats against recruits and said their property will be ‘confiscated.’ Rebels have killed or maimed local army and police recruits and their relatives and slain those they believed were army informants.

The young men interviewed by AFP at the recruiting session in Baramulla, 55 kilometres north of summer capital Srinagar, said they knew that trying out for the army put their lives in danger from militants.

‘I’m fully aware of the threat but I haven’t any other choice,’ said Ashraf Lone, 24, a college dropout. ‘I work as a labourer and earn 100 rupees a day. That isn’t even enough to buy medicine for my parents.’

Lone said joining the army was his ‘only hope.’

Despite the threats, the attractions of a military career are obvious. New recruits in the Indian army draw a monthly salary of 10,000 rupees and receive healthcare and other benefits.

The hefty turnouts at recruitment rallies such as in militant-infested Baramulla ‘is a sign of normalcy returning’ to the region, said army spokesman Colonel Uma Maheshwar.

The thousands of applicants who crowd the rallies are a far cry from the early years of the insurgency, when only a few used to show up.

As well as the army, people are also joining other Indian security forces such as the paramilitary Border Security Force and Central Reserve Police Force.

While some expressed ambivalence about joining the army, which is viewed as an oppressive force by many Kashmiris, many youngsters were excited at the prospect of a job.

‘I’m optimistic I’ll get the job. I want it,’ said Shakeel Ahanger, a 20-year-old in the final year of school.

‘I’ve no fear. Once I’m selected, I can take care of myself and my family,’ he said, panting heavily after running two kilometres as part of the trials.

even though many soldiers join the army because they need the job, they still need to be saluted for protecting their country. Jai jawan!

lol pure b/s. Unlike Punjabi( i originate from this place). Half of my family are based in Nelaam and the rest in Srinigar. I come into contact with the true Kashmiri's which are the Koshur and none of them say they are Indians, they infact despise being called Indians. Why should they?! They are totally different to Indians in every single way from culturally, lingustically, ancestorally and socially.

Can you elaborate on what is b/s ? Are the Kashmiri youth not joining Indian army ? The same Indian army that is "supposedly" involved in human rights violations in the valley ? Does that not tantamount to them having accepted their Indian connections ? Why would they want to join and fight alonside the forces of an enemy country ?

No.. Not at all.. Its a sign that Shia and Sunni groups are as opposed to each other there as in any other place.

In reality, its the fact that Kashmiri youth themselves who have made it abundantly clear that they hate India. But you people are masters of ignoring the obvious.

As for other jobs they could possibly do, what jobs could India, a struggling third world country, possibly offer?!?!
With 1 Billion people, I hear the gutter cleaning industry is pretty vibrant, what do you think?!?!

These are mostly Shia's... It could be another example of Shia Sunni animosity in the valley.

That might be true, although the original article does not mention whether the candidates were Shia or Sunni.

Given that your country is on the verge of implosion, I do not want to rub salt into your wounds by responding to your rant above. If it helps alleviate your pain, feel free to think that way :)

Serving in the army is not like doing any other job. The arabs that serve in IDF end up fighting FOR Israel AGAINST Arabs. So in effect they are WITH Israel.

Similarly the Kashmiris who join Indian army will fight against Kashmiri separatists and against Pakistan. What can be greater proof of a Kashmiri's loyalty towards India :)

Kashmiri youth … hmm .. guess let me have them do the talking …

“The number two topic of discussion is education, career, employment opportunities. Then we share our concern for the environment. The fight for Kashmir’s freedom or where the separatist movement is headed is last on the list,” he says

“India is doing very well economically. In the past few years, the country has progressed well. Since we are part of India, we too have a bright future,” says commerce student Mudassar Hussain, who is 21.

“We are fed up of the India-Pakistan stories. The youth is not interested in the movement any more.”

“People are more sensible now. Today no one can drag us away and convince us to be a militant. We have to think for ourselves, not follow [separatist leader Syed Ali Shah] Geelani or some other leader.”

Hope this gives you an idea what Kashmiri youths are thinking …

^ You can post anything, but Pakistanis will never accept the truth as far as Kashmir is concerned :p

Re: Kashmir youth risk lives to join Indian army

Here is the sum up of Pakistani view on Kashmir:

If something goes wrong there it is the Indian military's fault - they all start wailing like "oh my dear brotheren...boohoooo!"

If something goes right they go "it is a RAW conspiracy"..."oh no, it is not true"...."oh this" and "oh that"

Just plain impossible for these guys to admit Kashmir has gone through its worst and is happily settling back into India, particularly after they see what's happening to Pakistan.

The moment they admit that Kashmir has become peaceful, that would imply that cross border support of terrorism was something they controlled and when that stopped, Kashmir returned to peace. They will therefore never admit that on the grounds that the truth will incriminate them

that's what I think
