Plz correct me if i’m wrong. I think this ‘karo-kari’ is famous in proviance of Sindh. Do peoples still obey the decision of ‘Panchayat’ or ‘Jarga’ about ‘Karo-kari’. What is the government’s decision/action about this curse to prevent it?
Karo Kari is one of the curse in northern Sindh and Southern Punjab (mainly Saraiki Belt). People have to follow Biradri and Panchayat system. Besides this Karo-kari, there is also a tradition of Vani, where a woman is given in compensation to the aggrieved family.
Governments only give lip service to this cruelty, considering their vested interests related to such traditions.
Karo Kari and Wani are used as a tool to exploit women rights :( In most of the cases, its not the issue of ghairat, but to confiscate women right in property.
The Woman is alleged to involved in illicit relationship with a man (normally from the enemy party) and a man from woman family kills the woman and the enemy man on the name of ghairat.
In some cases, the son kills his aged mother alleging her relationship with a young man of the opposite party.
vice versa marriage. You mean watta satta. In Sindh, its called haththan aewaz (barter system)
Thats a different thing from Karo Kari. Karo means black man and Kari is black woman in Sindhi. Karo-Kari refers to their siah aimal (bad acts) literally. In our childhood, this Karo-Kari the hottest topic of PTV dramas. In a drama, Ghazal Siddique ( a fair colored actress) was called Kari by her brother (played by Gulab Chandio who is not that fair). I asked my Ammi ’ Ammi ye isse Kari kiyun keh raha hai, iss se ziada to yeh khud kara hai’
Karo Kari is called honour Killing in modern terminology.
You might have heard this centuries old tradition of giving evidence of ones purity by walking on fire. Its called Saakh in Sindh and still followed in some parts. Seeta Mayya had to give this saakh after returning from Lanka and same happened to Marvi, when she returned from Umar Soomro's palace.
