Karimov, Pictures, Propaganda and Reality

First, we need to deal with a method of propaganda that Guppies seem to swallow hook line and sinker. That is, the “Picture Speaks a thousand words Fallacy”. Recently there was a thread that showed Karimov and pictures of Bush and Rumsfeld et al. The presumption from this bit of propaganda was that the Americans were somehow the force behind the evil Karimov. So let’s look at some more pictures:

Happy Times with Karimov and Chirac:

Chillin’ with the Iranians:

Hmmm, meeting a lot of Iranians and Karzai:

Now this is interesting, speaking in the UN!:

And of course meeting with Putin (dressing alike too):

And the Chinese President:

So, modern leaders meet a lot of dignitaries, and get a lot of pictures taken.

Re: Karimov, Pictures, Propaganda and Reality

Now, who is really “backing” Karimov? As “Deep Throat” says, lets follow the money:

The Liberal Lefty Guardian figures the US is at fault for giving Karimov $50 million in Aid last year, one fifth of that in military assistance:

“Uzbekistan - strengthened by $50.6m in US aid last year, a fifth of which was for “security and law enforcement” - remains the dominant, US-friendly hardman neighbour of every other central Asian state, a useful linchpin for a threadbare and volatile region.”

On the other hand, why are these men drinking together?

Well thats easy. You see last year Putin signed a new**$BILLION** oil and gas deal (bringing the total agreements with Russia to $2.5 Billion):

Putin Signs Historic Uzbekistan Gas Deal

Combined Reports
TASHKENT, Uzbekistan – President Vladimir Putin arrived Wednesday in Uzbekistan on a trip aimed at cementing a strategic partnership with the Central Asian nation, which is rekindling ties with Moscow after years of turning its back on its former Soviet masters.

Putin was met at the Tashkent airport by Uzbek President Islam Karimov, and the two leaders headed directly into talks, where they signed a partnership agreement and a $1 billion production-sharing agreement to develop Uzbek natural gas deposits in the south of the country.

And of course Great China, revered by Guppies, (a mere 14 days after Karimovs troops were gunning down people in the streets)is signing a $600 million dollar Oil and Gas deal:

Whats more, China “firmly backs” Karimovs moves to restore order:

Analysis: Uzbek leader escapes isolation

WASHINGTON – In Beijing this week Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov signed a treaty of partnership with China that set the seal on a $600 million oil deal with the China National Petroleum Corp., along with 14 cooperation agreements on trade, customs, high technology and energy.

The Uzbek leader is evidently not isolated, despite his blunt rejection of calls from UN, US and European leaders for an independent inquiry into the deaths of at least 169 people when troops suppressed the May 13 “bandit uprising” in Andijan. (Other sources claim that more than 500 civilians were killed.)

Karimov met Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao during his three-day visit to Beijing, who said that they “firmly backed” his measures to restore order. Meanwhile top Russian officials endorsed Karimov’s claim that his troops in Andijan were fighting a Taliban-backed Islamist movement. They also supported the official Uzbek version that the trouble began when Islamic militants attacked a police station and then an army post, seizing arms, before staging a violent assault on a prison to free 23 detained Islamist businessmen.

So there you have it folks. While you are in a lather about US “support” for Karimov, China and Russia have been sliding in the back door, unnoticed and uncriticized. Who is the real force behind Karimov? Follow the $3 Billion.
