Karela- The exotic vegitable

Re: Karela- The exotic vegitable

Well, to all the naysayers, I'm still going to at least try it. The worst that happens is I have more mulch for the garden, lol

I never would have know how good marriage to a Muslim would be until I tried it :D LOL

Re: Karela- The exotic vegitable

^^^ lady we warned you.............

You dont know how bad marriage to a muslim man can be until you serve bad food!:D

Re: Karela- The exotic vegitable

If you want to get the bitterness out of it, freeze it first(after cleaning and cutting it ofcourse). Then defrost it before cooking and sprinkle of salt over it. Rub till its flaccid and squeeze as much liquid out of it as you can. Add water and squeeze again. Then fry it till its deep golden brown and slightly crisp, but just slightly. It works perfectly for me.

I usually have mum do the washing part :D

LOL @ Daisy - warning appreciated, I'll post how it goes

Re: Karela- The exotic vegitable

Karela stuffed with mince is :yummy:

When I was a kid I hated it more than any other green but my mom forced me to eat them saying they’ll do me good, we weren’t allowed to leave the table till our plates were cleared of all the veg, with sprouts and stuff it was easy we’d just bury them under the mash and then clear our plates but you can’t have mash with karela. :smash:

Re: Karela- The exotic vegitable

Yea my amma makes really good fried karela but I never had enough confidence to make it myself. Isn't it a lot of work squeezing all the liquid from it though? But is it as healthy a vegetable after we fry it? I only like karela when it's fried but i'm thinking it isn't too good for the blood after that.

Re: Karela- The exotic vegitable

I lovee fried kerela salen.....
1) Where they are stuffed with minced beef/chicken and spices..and placed in masala of a lot of onion, tomatoes and potatoes....
2) Chopped and fried and added to masala of lots of onions tomatoes and potatoes....absolutely yummyyyy with a parahta

What we do is chop up karela night before and add salt to add and rub it. Next day we thoroughly rinse and cook, its not as bitter anymore
