also why would any military be sent to the karakoram mts?
Is it due to the fact that Osama is still being looked for?

I have just done some research on this area under AOL....it concludes that this area is part of the line of control and has been going on for many years......
IF..anyone can give me a website that is up to date on this area.....or news site with recent info...."would be Greatly appreciated"

if yor are talking about Karakorum highway that was build 30 odd years ago and is closed during winter. It goes all the way to one of the chinese provience..

In Summer June-July, I reckon. The Highway is closed because of Snow. It will open in the Summer Season. 
As Abdali and Zakk pointed out, Pakistan has regular battles with India on Siachin Glaciers, which is beside east to Karakoram Highway. That’s why Pakistan Army is active 24/7 in that region.
