Karachiites - check out the Sindh Cultural Village mela/exhibition at Sea View

sorry for the misinformation earlier guys, it closed yesterday, 9th

if u get a chance i highly recommend this…Its really really really good. i dont think i have ever been to such a nice exhibition in my life.

There are cultural stalls from all of interior Sindh and then Pakistan Navy and Ministries for Environmental Protection, Agriculture, Child Development and many others have put their stalls or their whole rooms.

There is one village room or village house, forgot what its called, but they have basically mimiced village life there. they are selling authentic handicrafts and some traditional food items (shikarpuri achar etc) really cheap there as well. and they have these REALLY amazing miniature exhibits which are like encased in glass and inside are statues and clay models of village scenes. and its really realistic and beautiful. i dint even know we made such things in pakistan. its soo nice and u feel like u r in a village when u go there.

there’s live traditional music and dances and a live pakistan navy orchestra doing national songs…theres also a live sindhi show at night (dont know if the show was there just for the weekend tho)

did anyone go to the Mohatta Palace exhibition in Clifton that was held recently? That was really awesome as well, was going to post abt it on gs as well but it slipped my mind…dont know if its still on, but it was really good, if u guys happen to pass by there and get a chance to swing by that n see if its still on, u really shud as well

the location…its at sea view..right before that road of sea view starts…basically if u r going down from park towers towards abdullah shah ghazi…keep going down and take that road that goes down all the way to sea view (u also pass the bilquis edhi centre)…remember the big empty grounds there? its being held over there…there r signs on the walls abt it as well starting from abdullah shah ghazi mazar…else ask anyone on the road and they’ll tell u coz its a really big exhibition..
there were traffic jams in clifton area coz of it too thats how big it is!

ps. mods i wasnt sure where to post this and dint want the thread to be lost in cafe so i posted it here..

Re: Karachiites - check out the Sindh Cultural Village mela/exhibition at Sea View

You know, I’ve always wanted to see these exhibitions when I go to Karachi - but where can I find out about what is going on in the city. My relatives are usually clueless as to what is going on. And I’m talking about exhibitions open to the public. I refuse to pay like 1000 ruppees to go and see some private art gallery. :snooty:

Re: Karachiites - check out the Sindh Cultural Village mela/exhibition at Sea View

pictures?

Re: Karachiites - check out the Sindh Cultural Village mela/exhibition at Sea View

Will there be chicks?

Re: Karachiites - check out the Sindh Cultural Village mela/exhibition at Sea View

TDW - yup, they have a poultry farming section there as well where they have kept different species of hens and chicks that are raised in Sindh.

GD - i wish i had a camera! sigh i really should invest in a digital camera or atleast a cell phone with a camera but I'm so not a picture person. Anyways, a lot of people were taking pictures and I think some news channels and newspapers covered/are covering it too. If I come across any pics I'll post em here :)

PCG yeah I hear you abt not wanting to pay for those pvt exhibitions, I usually just hear about these things from friends waghera and my dad is also into this stuff so he takes us. Usually newspapers (like DAWN) do carry announcements of such events, but I know reading the newspaper is prolly not something most ppl do when they visit Pak. Next time though just briefly skim the newspaper everyday when you come and you'll get to know what's happenning in the city.

Till Baqar Eid? I thought it was a 3 day festival only (jan 7, 8, 9), and was lamenting having missed it. It would be great if it were to be extended till Eid. Plus I also appreciate the fact that they have decided to donate all proceeds to the tsunami fund.

Re: Karachiites - check out the Sindh Cultural Village mela/exhibition at Sea View

An interesting comment by Cowasjee of Dawn in this week's article:

"What kind of people are we? Just where have our leaders led us, just what have they inspired us to be?

The oceans are angry. Hundreds of thousands have died and thousands have been buried in mass graves. Millions have been rendered homeless, orphaned, widowed, childless and stricken by grief. The world is weeping, praying, collecting funds, doing what it can to alleviate the massive human suffering, new year and other celebrations were cancelled - and how did the government of Sindh react?

It organized a sea festival. The province's chief minister, Arbab Rahim, joyously inaugurated the merry-making, with the brass bands of the Pakistan Navy blazing away, with flags jubilantly flying. A 'sea' festival, of all things! We should be left speechless.

Amazingly, and most fortunately, nature has been kind to Pakistan. We were well within the range of the Tsunami which caused havoc as far away from its epicentre as Somalia. Had we been struck, how many millions in Karachi, in which over 50 per cent of the estimated population of some 15 million live in 'katchchi abadis', would have died and how many more millions who inhabit the sub-standard buildings indiscriminately 'regularized' by the government of Sindh and its Building Control department would have been left bereft of their homes and possessions?"

Re: Karachiites - check out the Sindh Cultural Village mela/exhibition at Sea View

Irem yesterday was the last day of the exhibition.

Agreed with everything u wrote up there except being for cheap, well it might still be cheap considring the price tags we get here in khi. But almost everything (the one from interior) were almost 4 to 8 times more in price here.

:bravo:

Re: Karachiites - check out the Sindh Cultural Village mela/exhibition at Sea View

Extremely sorry for the misinformation guys, I had been told that it was open till baqraEid by a friend but my dad told me that yesterday was the last day.

JB - i was there on Sunday, 9th…kyun? were u there as well? when & what time? and yep u r right it was prolly cheaper than maybe the prices in interior sindh but im comparing with prices in Gulf and Zainab shopping ctrs in khi asal mein…

PCG …ugh … that article is soooo :nook:

Cowasjee has some very good points to raise sometimes but I do not agree with him this time. He seems to be criticising for the sake of criticising. As usual our columnists only have negative things to talk about and give us the doomsday scenario about our country.

We should atleast come forward and appreciate the good things our govt does.

I thought the festival was just superb, excellently organised with a lot of effort, and a nice and healthy family enjoyment for the public. I don’t understand his criticism about it being a sea festival either. So what if it was a sea festival? The point is it attracted many people and raised a lot of funds which many other festivals could not have raised. Plus it was economical and it was open to the entire public. I don’t think it in any way belittles or disparages the Tsunami victims, not at all, I mean it was to collect funds for them.

Why does Cowasjee have to paint it in such a negative light? And if he thinks it was so bad then is he going to offer an alternative? Is he just going to blindly criticise the government or give some constructive suggestions as well?

I am a Pakistani. I went there. I loved it. My parents are Pakistanis too and they both absolutely loved it too. Most people who were there, and there were many many, seemed to have loved it. A big thumbs up and a huge round of applause to the government for organising it. It was obvious how much effort had gone into organising it and I felt really proud of my government and my country when I was there.

And yes we might not have the resources to save ourselves from such a calamity (God forbid) but afterall these are unavoidable natural calamities from the Almighty and man cannot do much to save himself from them. Maybe we can do something about it and perhaps establish a warning system but the truth remains that we are not a wealthy country and we can’t afford very modern warning systems. Such things are from Allah swt.

Akif bhai sorry for the misinformation, you are right it ended yesterday. I know its so great that they have decided to donate the funds to Tsunami. Hmmmm, don’t worry about missing it…for people who have been to villages (not sure how I think/recall this but I have an impression that you have travelled to rural areas of Pak..) it was not something so novel so you didn’t miss much in that sense…and maybe they will do something of this nature soon again. The government is into organising a lot of festivals these days, the other ones might be different but I’m sure they’ll be really good too.

Re: Karachiites - check out the Sindh Cultural Village mela/exhibition at Sea View

My mom & 10 yr old cousin were there…ammi wanted to check it out too. I stayed at khala’s home. She lives right in front of there.
