Karachi, You are Killing Me!

Mere life and love come to die` | ePaper | DAWN.COM

Interesting title and the topic. But why such books are being published from India?

Aren’t there any publishers in Pakistan who can get such works published? Are these publishers afraid of somethings or its not economically viable to publish English books in Pakistan?

Re: Karachi, You are Killing Me!

Given the lack of political, intellectual and personal freedom in Karachi, it would not be unfair to suspect that it is perhaps intentional to have such books published in India. Primarily to save publishing houses from being closed or burned down or members killed.

Re: Karachi, You are Killing Me!

A few years back when Dawn News TV channel began it was in English, later they had to convert it into Urdu, not a big market for English in the country.

Re: Karachi, You are Killing Me!

But in Literature Festivals (both Karachi and Lahore), vast majority of the books featured were in English. The event was also primarily covered by the English newspapers.

Re: Karachi, You are Killing Me!

I think thats the point. Publishers are more concerned about sales. While Urdu books got market in the country, English market is quite small. We got few English book publishers like Oxford and they are recently started publishing Urdu books.

Re: Karachi, You are Killing Me!

If not Karachi, then any publisher from Lahore should have done the job. Lately, Sang e Meel, who is publishing most of Urdu works from classics like Tilsm e Hoshruba to new writers, started publishing English books (though most on history and research).

I think besides publishers choice, writers also want to be published outside Pakistan. That gives them a feeling of being internationally recognised (even that means the book is not sold at all in country where its published). I don't how many Indian readers will be interested in this book.
