Murder of medical student By our correspondent
Karachi
Highly-charged scenes were witnessed on the premises of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) after the murder of a medical student of the Sindh Medical College (SMC) during a clash between two rival groups on Wednesday. The murder reportedly occured during a cake-cutting ceremony marking the 60th independence anniversary of the country.
The armed and stick-wielding mob virtually took control of the emergency ward of the JPMC soon after hearing the news of the death of Hafiz Abdul Rehman, a first year medical student at the SMC.
The deceased was also the Nazim of the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) at the School of Physiotherapy. He succumbed to injuries sustained after a clash with activists of the Punjabi Students Association (PSA).
Some of the mob allegedly resorted to aerial fire, forcing everyone to flee for safety. The stick-wielding youths entered the emergency ward of the JPMC and ransacked everything, compelling the hospital administration to shift the injured persons to different wards immediately.
The mob also blocked the main road in front of the JPMC as a result of which the traffic was diverted to different roads. All medical stores and other shops outside the JPMC were also closed after the incident.
“We took a sigh of relief when some prudent young men came and asked us to perform our duty,” Dr Seemin Jamali, Deputy Director of the JPMC told The News.
**“Two stick-wielding youth forcibly entered the emergency ward and overturned everything, causing scare among nurses,” one of the nurses said. They did not misbehave with us but snatched the entry record of patients from the receptionist, she added.
**
The violence, which started at around 3:00 pm on Wednesday, continued till 7:30 pm. The policemen left the JPMC premises after being attacked by the mob and were seen standing at a considerable distance.
When a policeman in civvies tried to take away a damaged police mobile from the JPMC premises late in the evening, the mob got hold on him and beat him up. He, however, managed to escape after abandoning the mobile.
**Some unknown persons also resorted to aerial fire at the SMC hostel.
**
Someone had scrawled graffiti all over the walls of the JPMC against the rival students group and the police. One slogan said: “Murder of Hafiz Abdul Rehman was committed in the presence of SHO Saddar”.
Dr Seemin said that the School of Physiotherapy of the JPMC and SMC have been closed till further orders. She said the mob broke doors and windows of the surgical ward and the newly-built emergency ward of the JPMC. Seemin said that she saw a dozens of youth resorting to aerial fire near the emergency ward and people running for shelter. “They broke everything which came in their way but mercifully they did not beat the medical staff,” she said.
Hafiz Abdul Rehman died immediately after being hit with a hard and blunt object.
**A watchman at the emergency ward said several young men came in two vehicles (a point bus of University of Karachi and Governmet Technical College, SITE) and took control of the hospital.
“We immediately closed doors and the hooliganism also caused inconvenience for the patients,” Dr Seemin said. She said the mob did not allow anyone to enter the emergency ward. However, the hospital sources said that one policeman in civvies managed to enter the emergency ward and conducted necessary legal proceedings.**
Dr Seemin said that whenever any big incident occurs, the JPMC doctors and other staff suffer at the hands of the angry mob. She said that the hospital lacked adequate security and the personnel of the law-enforcement agencies often left them at the mercy of the mob.
