Karachi - Pul Ke Us Paar

hmm...sorry to hear abt that Imdad

the guys shooting over the girl was the mesoom sheraam murders i was talking abt. one guy went and killed his best friend at his house over the girl and then shot himself. sigh

i remember the other incident u r talking abt as well i think..my gosh that was scary..i dint actually see it though...

Niqabi... an excellent thread.
You described Karachi exactly as I have always envisaged it, albeit from a total anari point of view (mine, that is).

Fraudia, nice input!
Now, THIS is what i call a DISCUSSION.
Informative, challenging, and very insightfull.
i actually learned something from this.

Well done, guys.

anokha

glad to see u find this informative. when i moved to karachi, some of my cousins had moved back at the same time and we explored the whole city, by car, bus, and even rental bicycles..in korangi, shah faisal colony and landhi area u could rent bicycles for a couple of ruppes per hour, now this is mid 80's so prices probably have changed.

We got to experience the city like many people growing up in karachi have not experienced. I always cherish those memories. sadly the law and order situation got so bad soon afterwatds, that the second year that I spent was not quite as fun.

the life in the city like any big city varies so widely from one place to another..few miles from Bath island, u run into korangi and landhi which is a diff of day and night. u can go from KDA1 to lalukhet in less than 10 minutes on the same road..(not a highway)

hey ANOKHAUK, I’m honored!! and so happy u liked it!!! :hula: thank U so much

and no point of view is anari…so i dont think ur pov is anari either

How big is the effective Pakistani middle class or consumer class.

I did A-level economics and saw a Lorenz curve for pakistan in a text book which seemed to suggest that about 10% of the people had 90% of the wealth.

Is that accurate?

Do we class about 20% of Pakistani's as middle class (that being the top 5% and then the 15% or so affluent class who are not rich)?

In India the middle class is placed at about 20% , or 200 million people, what is our figure?

Pakistani middle class should be close to 5% at the most.

I think 5% is an underestimation.

95% of Pakistanis dont live in squalor. The CIA factbook places our figure below the poverty line at 35%-which is terrible but that still leaves 65% of Pakistanis above a subsistance level.

Of that 65%, its inconcievable that only 5% are well above that limit.

Logic indicates a figure of around 15%?
