Fazlullah has vowed to attack only government and security officials.
“The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) strongly deny such inhuman activities,” Shahidullah Shahid, a Taliban spokesman, told Reuters by telephone from an undisclosed location– Reuters**
I guess that it is good news for FATA that there is precedent now for operation failure in urban / rural areas of high population density?
I feel some people want army to get involved in Karachi (Sindh 1, Sindh2), if that happens they'll get bogged down there. Its not easy to get out of this mess now. If an operation needs to be carried out it will need to be similar to the ones Bashar Asad is undertaking in Syria but that would result in a lot of bloodshed.
Bashar Assad is dropping barrel bombs on his population errr terrorists and al-Qaeda insurgents. I was even against using artillery like army did recently in FATA attack when we now have smart bombs. Smart bombs have lower casualties and are more accurate as IDF has shown in the past. Take out the foreigners and their anti-Pak allies this way.
Army, even though Rangers are semi-part of it, DOES NOT want to get bogged down in Karachi. This tidbit was shared by Anatol Lieven in one of his talks where his sources 'off record' said to him that the biggest nightmare for the army is that Karachi goes out-of-control and the army is told to do an "indiscriminate operation" in a large metropolis. The army fears that all its strength would be sucked into Karachi and considering their skepticism, I'd say the army isn't 100% sure that it could solve the problem after that.

We used to make fun of Afghanistan a decade ago that its ruled of warlords without a central authority. Thats what Pakistan has become, Balochistan, Fata, parts of KPK and Karachi have gone out of control. Considering the security situation of the country, this would be the last thing the army would want now. Get stuck in a metropolis of 20 million, which is facing violence due to political, sectarian and gang wars.
It is unfortunate to see Karachi falling prey to militia's and terrorist groups. Karachi which has so much more potential to be the hub of economic boom for Pakistan is plagued in such a destructive way. We hope that the new Pakistani government and the security forces would quickly put an end to this violence so the entire region could witness the prosperity this city could bring its people.
