Karachi: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for the Karachi-Lahore Motorway (M9) that would connect this southern port city with the northern parts of the country.

The first phase of the mega project is expected to be completed in two-and-a-half years and cost 36 billion rupees (Dh1.2 billion).

At the brief inaugural ceremony, Sharif said that it was his earnest desire to begin the work on the motorway project.

In the first phase, the Karachi-to-Hyderabad section would be completed within two-and-half years and then work would begin on the** Hyderabad-to-Sukkur** section of the grand road.

The length of the road will be more than 1,100 kilometres once complete.

The prime minister said that the government was trying to shore up the resources for the next phases of the eight-lane motorway so that faster communication means could help the country enter the next development phase.

He also mentioned the work on the other roads, which were being constructed in the Hazara division of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Sharif said that work on **Khunjerab-to-Gwadar road **was being carried out and it would be part of the Pakistan-China corridor.

He vowed to set up a network of motorways all over the country so that all the provinces could be interconnected, with a faster means of travelling between them.

**The construction of M9 has been awarded to the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) for the next 25 years on built-operate-transfer basis.
**

According to the contract agreement, **the existing four-lane Karachi-Hyderabad Super Highway would be converted into six-lane 9M meeting international standards. **

The project is being on** public-private partnership basis and this would be the second-largest project in the country to be built on such basis.**

FWO would pay 143 billion rupees to the state-run National Highway Authority (NHA) and another share of 109 billion rupees as tax to the government of Pakistan.

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

Good step, need to complete it in this tenure only, and for that, with Karachi-HYD they should start working on Lahore-Multan

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

Good step. Its only logical to link port city with rest of the Pakistan with reliable and efficient road network.

If hope someone (federal or sindh govt) finally also take on the now almost 30 years in pending Karachi Mass Transit project.

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

Isn't sind part from Hyderabad to Karachi widening the current highway? I always thought that this highway went beyond Hyderabad but guess not.

patan Bai naraz if KCR is made. Delhi took lead from Karachi but mustafa kamal couldn't even get the bus mafia to drive green buses. Ethnic politics.

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

Very progressive step indeed :k:

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

I love this motorway and wish to drive

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

wuts the status of this motorway after an year?

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

The following report said that out of PKR 5 billion allotted to Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway session, no penny issued during 9 months of fiscal year 2015-16. Look at the seriousness of PMLN govt for the country other than their small heaven Lahore.

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

Muqawwee pai jaan … plz dont quote some local biased newspaper as an authentic source as massive roads connectivity in different phases is going on in whole Pakistan. There may be delay in funds allocation but blaming Lahore development/funds diversion as an excuse for incompetency of Sindh Govt is not right :halo:

ISLAMABAD: The government of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) is vigorously working on road infrastructure projects worth billions of rupees to reduce poverty, said official sources on Sunday.

According to reports, Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Azad Kashmir are being connected through a network of high quality roads and highways to help accelerate socio-economic development in the country.

The Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) allocation to National Highway Authority (NHA) was raised from Rs 50 billion in 2011-12 to Rs 112 billion in 2014-15 as transport infrastructure can contribute towards economic growth and social development.

NHA is developing infrastructure projects through private sector on Build Own Operate (BOO) and Build Operate Transfer (BOT) basis. Three such projects worth Rs 91 billion would generate Rs 366 billion over the concession period.

A number of road connectivity projects have also been launched to reap maximum economic and social benefits.

The 136-kilometre Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway with 16 exits is being constructed with Rs 24 Billion.**

The project, which was inaugurated last year, was expected to complete within 2.5 years. The M-9 will later be linked to the Karachi-Lahore and Karachi-Gawadar Motorways to constitute the longest area in the motorway network.
**
Motorway E-35 (Burhan-Havelian) was inaugurated on November 29, 2014. The link is part of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) agreement. The 60-kilometre long expressway will reduce the drive time from Islamabad to Havelian in just 30 minutes and also facilitate Havelian Dry Port project.

Sialkot-Lahore Motorway project began from Saahowala-Sambrial and lead to Lahore along the banks of two local main canals namely Marala-Ravi-Link (MR Link) Canal through Motra-Daska and Bambaanwala-Ravi-Baidian (BRB) Canal Daska.

Over Rs 20 billion signal-free corridor of Islamabad Highway envisages conversion of 24-kilometre Expressway from Zero Point to GT Road Rawat besides addition of lanes to ease traffic congestion.

Work on Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway and Khanewal-Lahore Motorway would be completed soon.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has inaugurated second section of the M4 motorway, which will stretch from Faisalabad to Multan upon completion.

Likewise, Pindi Bhattian-Faisalabad Motorway is being planned to be converted from existing four lanes into a six-lane motorway. A good road may be built to connect Okara and Bahawalpur with Karachi-Lahore Motorway.

The projects under CPEC comprise modern highways and railway transportation system linking Kashgar in West China to Khunjrab in the north and onwards to Karachi and Gawadar in the south of Pakistan through multiple routes.

Meanwhile, National Highway Authority (NHA) is set to start construction of 1,274 kilometre road projects with the cost of Rs 878 million.

Various road infrastructure projects are also in different phases including Karachi- Hyderabad Motorway (M-9) of 136 Kilometres; Hoshab-Basima-Sorab Road of 454 Kilometres, Khuzdar-Ratodero Road (143 Km),Gwadar-Turbat-Hoshab Road of 193 Kilometres.

The M4 Motorway is divided into four segments that include the 58 kilometres Faisalabad-Gojra section, which has already been opened for traffic; the 62 kilometres Gojra-Shorkot section is expected to be completed by 2019, the 64 kilometre Shorkot-Dinpur section and the 45 kilometre Khanewal-Multan section.

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

Sorry, you did not impress me with old reason of incompetency of Sindh Government in this matter. Motor way is a Federal Govt project and nothing to do with Sindh Govt.

You don’t know the reliability of these newspapers. They are not just like you propaganda social media handles, they come with facts and figures. So better luck next time and again convey your Madam that with such kaale kartoot, PMLN will not gain support from small provinces.

PS: If you have any contacts with the persons dealing with development budget then refute the report published in Sindhi newspapers that Federal Govt has not issued any funds for the following projects in Sindh:

(i) Ratto Dero- Sehwan Sharif Road (Budget allocated Rs 85 Crore)
(ii) Sukkur-Hyderabad Motor way (Budget allocated Rs 5.5 Billion)
(iii) Karachi Greater Sewerage Plant (This is a must, as you were quite excited to call our city a city of garbage. Now let us know what your party is doing in this regard, before asking for votes).
(iv) Lyari Express Way (before posting further pictures of roads in Lahore, do spend your energies to explain why funds for this project in financial hub of the country have not been released).

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

I knew that nothing would come around here, let’s see how far CPEC can go before pmln’s tenure is over. I am sure Karachi lahore motorway is a part of it. Good connectivity between regions would improve people to people contacts and hence bring people together.

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

this whole project (all segments) should’ve been completed yesterday.

too slow and too late.

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

Agreed :k:

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

I was just wondering if this motorway gets completed which is gona be a huge success, how quickly can one reach lahore by car?

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

lolz
maintenance/layering of lahore-Isb section has taken more than one and half year yet incomplete.

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

Roughly 1000 kms, and @120 kph it should take around 8-10 hours. Personally I’d still stop the night mid way.

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

Thanks Ali.

Im hoping to drive tru Khi → Lhr → Isb → Peshawar more for sightseeing purposes but lets see if motorway completes by then

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

Why not continue on to Quetta—>Gawadar–> Back to Karachi… Or is that still to dangerous? Western Route of CPEC is already being built from what I understand.

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

Its all dry mountain area from quetta to khi… nothing to see. Except inside Gwadar may be

Re: Karachi-Lahore Motorway foundation stone laid

Isn’t Makran Coastal highway link Karachi and Quetta. That road got beautiful sea-shore like Kund-Malir and archaeological site like ‘Princess of hope’, ‘Nani Mandir’, etc.
