Soldiers given shoot-to-kill order in Karachi’s Sindh province
Security forces in the southern Sindh province received order to shoot on sight against any protesters caught committing acts of violence following the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, former prime minister and leader of the opposition party: the news was confirmed by Akhtar Zaman, provincial minister of the Home Office. Bhutto, who was killed yesterday during a political rally in Rawalpindi, had her political stronghold in Karachi, capital of the province, and in effects the Sindh province witnessed the worst turmoil. A policeman was killed yesterday in Karachi during clashes that erupted all over the city. The total number of confirmed deaths caused by the current uproar in all of Pakistan consequently rises to eleven. In the same port city an angry mob set fire to the premises of Kentucky Fried Chicken, part of and American fast-food chain, as well as to a petrol station and to several parked vehicles. Occasional gunfire shots rang out through the night, but whether these caused further victims remains unknown. All petrol stations have been shut down, and airline passengers are stuck in the local airport because of the total absence of yellow cabs.
