Karachi - Again :)

I might be going to Pakistan after England. I’m quite excited. I have some questions though. As this will be my first time in Pakistan, I want some information.

  1. Does anybody have a map that shoes the different neighbourhoods and main roads in Karachi?

  2. Where is Nazimabad? (sp?)

  3. How far is .2 from everything?

  4. Is it better to stay at a hotel? My nani has a house in Nazimabad so we might stay there.

  5. What sites should I see in Karachi? (keep in mind, I will be there for a week only)

  6. Where do I go for the best clothes and jewelry shopping?

Re: Karachi - Again

Mehnaz it would be better, if you could go to Pakistan with some time at your disposal, as you might not visit it for quite some time after that. Go visit, Lahore, Islamabad, and the Northern Areas as well. It depends on when you go there, as after October it is really cold in the Northern parts.

No ... I can only do a week. I guess I won't be sight seeing. That's fine as I will be going again for my cousin's wedding at which time I will spend at least a month there. I guess for now, I just need to shop. One week is fine for shopping ... :p

One week is more than enough to see some hot spots and do some serious shopping.

You will need a ride there. October is pretty hot in Karachi, but after that its gets very pleasant.

I am not a Karachite, so my experience is only that of a frequent visitor. Some of the nice places to visit are already covered in the other Karachi thread... for shopping, "Point" (expensive), Gulf (moderate) and Tariq Road/Saddar (moderate to cheap). "Point" is in Clifton area, near teen-talwaar. Quite famous actually. Many brand name shops are there. Gulf Shopping Center is the place of choice for most woman, don't know why. I have heard its great for buying clothes... (and from my point of view, not too too hard on the wallet too).

For eating out, Karachi has a lot of options. Depends on your taste and where people are willing to take you. :)

Thanks Faisal. :) If things go according to plan, I will be in Karachi in the last week of October for one week. I guess cause it's my first time there (where I'll actually have memories unlike the last 2 times I've been), I want to take it in small doses cause I know I will experience culture shock. One week is enough for the first time. I will go again for at least a month to do some serious siteseeing.

Will mosquitos still be around in October? What other insects are there that are notorious for biting? I'm allergic to mosquito bites :(.

Not sure about mosquitoes.... plus this time, due to the recent oil spill, there will be some other things you would be careful about. Hopefully things would have improved be end-Oct. Just use bottled water, cz Karachi water supply is almost dysfuctional and the tap water is not recommended for drinking at all (even for locals - they boil it). So, if you want to have a medically healthy one week, take good care of your water intake.

The rest should be all fun. Karachi is actually a pretty nice place to go around and shop-till-you-drop. Make sure you take some time to go around Zamzama... it has some fairly top-notch boutiques and some great eating outlets.

hmmm..some questions first…

  • who r u going with?
  • do u have relatives/friends in khi who can take u around and take out a lot of time for u?
  • the house at nazmabad, is ur family living there, i mean will u be living with them or just moving into an empty house?
  • do u have a foreign accent while speaking urdu, will people be able to tell u r not a local by ur urdu? coz if u do then the shopkeepers might rip u off if u dont have a local with u..but v’ll give u a basic rundown on bargaining 101 so u’ll be set  actually that’ll be useful anyway…
  • how much money do u have at ur disposal for ur trip?

hmm…lemme know these things n then i’ll be back with some answers to ur questions…

n btw welcome to pakistan :flower1: i’ll most prolly be there in october when u’re there too inshallah…

Hmmm .... Irem ... I'll answer your questions as best as I can. :)

  1. I am going with my mama;

  2. I do have relatives there. However, I have never met them ... I have about 6 cousins my age. I'm assuming they will take me around;

  3. The house is apparently empty. My nani is leaving here next week and will be staying at the house while in Pakistan. I think she's going to sell it at the end of her stay (in a few months). I'm not too sure;

  4. People will be able to tell I'm foreign cause I will speak only in English. :) I will mostlikely keep my mouth shut in the stores and let my cousins do the bargaining .... assuming they go. If it is just me and my mama, well, she is excellent at bargaining but we might get ripped off. I guess she doesn't have a local accent .... hasn't been to Pakistan herself in 20 years;

  5. I'll be there for a week maximum. All I intend on getting is clothes. I think $500 is sufficient considering I just got 2 new outfits from Pakistan that cost me $50 each (with the conversion rate).

Nothing is definite as of yet. I will only know when I'm in England next month if we will go further to Karachi for a week. If I'm there, I suggest you and I meet if possible. :)

  1. Does anybody have a map that shoes the different neighborhoods and main roads in Karachi?

Well you can take a look on apnakarachisite but if you have not been earlier, or you are not familiar with the city its not going to help you that much, its not like a well defined map detailed structure with each block and street, which could be compared with mapquest or others.

  1. Where is Nazimabad? (sp?)

Nazimabad is north of Karachi, which is most populated area of city, and it divided into blocks and nos. One more thing is to confirm is its not North Nazimabad, they are two different places.
I can’t recall at all that there are any nice shopping places in that area, there are but normally they don’t attract overseas visitors.

  1. How far is .2 from everything?

Simple and easy you are marginal an hour and half away from Tariq Road and Saddar Clifton and two hours for Defence if you are traveling around mid after noon 12 to 2pm or 5pm to 7pm you will may hit bad traffic and time variations, delay and with your schedules will be normal. So make sure keep all these things in mind when you plan for 3 hour shopping you may end up with 5 or 6 hours extra, The phenomena of revisiting for price check wont apply or would not be in favor with you short mini stopover.

Basically I would say you will away but if you have arranged way of transport or your cousins are there for you, it wont be a problem. You can hire a car with a driver, for a week and with a very nominal amount of money, and you can hop around everywhere without disturbing anyone in worse cases. But here if you are going after a long time I don’t think you will need it as people from that part of the city are very helpful and hospitable in nature.

  1. Is it better to stay at a hotel? My nani has a house in Nazimabad so we might stay there.

If you do that, It will be rude! And mean. when you will acknowledge your relatives, most will look forward for you to come and stay with them and it’s the case with me all the time when expects while I do have my own house back there. I may be wrong and situations may vary, with you. But again I would say try to cherish your moments and create everlasting memories with you grandmother and cousins as clothes and things are replaceable but feelings and moments are nt.

  1. What sites should I see in Karachi? (keep in mind, I will be there for a week only)I will be in Karachi in the last week of October for one week.

The more you are getting excited, it may upset you realizing and agreeing that a week is nothing. In case if you know the tailors, shops and spot to go and pick it up. The time is too short “ Karachi is city of nights” life starts at night and people sleep very late in most parts. So most of the above mentioned places referred by friends is like no show till late 11 30 am, and its normal for years.
Let assume like this if you are there for 7 days, excluding Sunday you have six working days. Where for shopping you have nine hours multiplies by 6 is equalent to fifty fours hours.
But the it wont be the case with you, and the bad part is if you are landing in the last week of Oct, your hours are down by thirty six hours only, Guess Why ?? It will be the first week of Ramadan ul Mubarak where everything gets a bit slow then usual, timings differ, because of fasting and prayers. And its less could be seen, eat or shop around that time. Some do go vacations and shop goes under renovation preparaing for last two weeks, where the city blazes up in lights and crowds over street for Eid , …….Best time for you and all who are visiting back home.. I am not trying to discourage your excitement but portraying you the reality.
I would say try to visit Marina, Creek club, Clifton, the best bet would be get glimpse on Irem post you will see names in details.

6.Where do I go for the best clothes and jewelry shopping?

There are many places, but for Day 1 from Bahadurabad Chorangi to Allah Wala chorangi can work for you, which is whole Tariq Road. Onwards from Bahadurabdad all kind of Duppatas, Embroidery work are behind the Chorangi, Wedding clothes next two blocks and a next to Dolmen Building. Go to Rabi center, Dolmen, and Mateen. While entering Rabi and Mateen don’t forget a handy fan or oxygen mask as it is too hot inside. Lol, believe me I am not joking.
But do go and get the experience to enjoy. Tariq Center is will be the best place for Chorrian.
Metro and English Boot House are well famous for their shoes, at Tariq Road. I mean Sandals for you. Want to get some thing for men s then Kurta Gali is very next to Metro. This very spot is known as Café Liberty. Where are there series of Jewelry shop. Recommended are Abdul Khaliq and Sons, Naurattan, Marhaba Jewelers, Chotani and Sadiq as well. Where I can say Naurattan will be safe and sound with design and price wise. Starting from Café Liberty to next Chowrangi shops are awaiting like Jafferjee’s and boutiques.

2nd day for Clifton, Starting from Teen Talwar checking all center and ending up in zamzam will cover all of your needs. If something left use 3rd day either for Hydri market near too you or Saddar where you will feel the utter most unforgettable moments of well populated city.

7.Will mosquitoes still be around in October? What other insects are there that are notorious for biting? I'm allergic to mosquito bites.

Well yes, they will be there to welcome you and get more healthy with American blood supply.
Other, Flies which are common. To avoid mosquito bites use mosphil lotion it will work against. Looks for lizards common in Stairways and rest rooms, don’t worry they wont bit you. But should be ready to meet Mickey mouse wild family members which intrudes in homes via gutters and kitchens, Depends how old is your house is well protected. …and tiny chocolate brown coacroaches….loll ….I am just joking it wont the like that.

All I intend on getting is clothes. I think $500 is sufficient considering I just got 2 new outfits from Pakistan that cost me $50 each (with the conversion rate).

No and no way, yeah if your mother shares the jewelry money but 500 dollars is nothing when it comes to female shopping I know from my family every time they cross the limit of 2000 dollars, and still shining eyes looks forward at to get more. No idea of your taste and selections but mom and bhabhi’s leaves us bank corrupt at last day of their stay. I hope you don’t experienced the same with your mom. For example quality suites from boutiques starts from fours thousand rupees. Normally hangs for six thousand, if each is six, then your luggage will have five suites only on your return and that wont be acceptable to you ! I know you girls??

Just watch how quick a 1000 rupee note changes its color to red and then green. You will love the rainbow colors contrast, downsizing to a five rupee note.

Nothing is definite as of yet. I will only know when I'm in England next month if we will go further to Karachi for a week.

Me too planning for UK next month attending a cable and satellite Exhibition and conference, if everything went smooth I may get you guys at the Trafalgar on 13 Oct. Where I can discuss and help you out more advancing towards the adventure.

All apology in advance for sp mistake and grammer, bit too sleepy now, may edit or add tomorrow.

Regards.

YKKB.

Thank you for this information. When I’ll be going to Pakistan next year and to KHI for the first time in my life, this might be very useful. :k:

YKKB, we are meeting on October 11 not the 13th. :)

Anyway, I might go for 2 weeks instead of just 1 week. I am a bit worried about it being Ramadan and the hours of shops. I understand the hours may be a bit off, but if everything is open till late in the evening, then I think we should be o.k.

I'm a bit nervous about going to Pakistan. I mean, I understand the language perfectly but am quite insecure when it comes to speaking Urdu as I make atrocious mistakes which my parents have failed to correct over the years as they found my mispronunciations amusing. :) Oh well. We'll see how it goes.

Considering this, it may actually be worthwhile if you could record your conversations with pathan bacha dukaandaars at Rabi Centre :hehe: ..haggling over prices and what not

Mehnaz, here is a quick Karachi Slang lesson for you.

Abbay suun bay : May I have your attention, please?

Ammaa Yaar : Hey Buddy

Phadda karnay kaa : Don't mess with me

Kia hay kay: Actually, what I am trying to say

Pichlee galli sai nikkal lay : Get the fk out of here

Aanp KaraanchiN sain hain kia: Are you from Lahore?

Heeng laylo: You might hear this if your Naani decideds to rent a flat near Jubilee.

more to follow...

Lahore?

I wanted to be all inclusive in my post. So, plugged in Lahore.

Mehnaz: Pay no attention to funguy.

I'd just like to say that, do stay with your relatives. It's a very different experience, and even though you may have never seen your cousins it'll give you time to get to know them. I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun and won't regret it...and shop till you drop!

And since we are talking about Karachi in October, this is really not a far-fetched scenario. Keep yourself hyderated. People sweat like crazy in all that humidity.

To tell you the truth, I’m a bit afraid of going to Pakistan. :frowning: I don’t know if I will like it. I know I will get along with my cousins (due to my wonderful persona :halo: ) but I just do not know what to expect from the country itself. I’ve heard great things about Pakistan as well as negative things. I don’t want to be ogled at cause 1. I’m a woman and 2. I’m a foreigner. I think that’s what I’m most concerned about. Plus, the crime situation … I dunno … it does sound a bit scary.

On top of that, my daddy is telling me to just stay in Pakistan for all of Ramadan and celebrate Eid over there. That’s fine and dandy, but that will be one heck of a long trip (3 weeks in the UK, then a month in Pakistan).

What shots do I need to get done before I go? Also, other than the typical Pepto Bismol, Imodium, Tylenol ... is there anything else I should take?
