LONDON: India’s World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev was declared the Indian cricketer of the Century in the late night Wisden award ceremony held here on Tuesday.
The Haryana hurricane was selected ahead of 15 other cricketers including Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar for the most coveted award at a ceremony organised by the Wisden to celebrate the glorious moments of Indian cricket.
Kapil Dev, who took 434 wickets from 131 tests and also scored 5248 runs, led India to its most memorable victory when the team upset the mighty West Indies in the final to lift the 1983 World Cup.
The award was presented by former West Indian captain Vivian Richards.
Sachin Tendulkar was named the Indian Cricketer of the Century (People’s Choice).
VVS Laxman was given the award for the Batting Performance of the Century for his epoch making 281 against Australia in Kolkata 2001. India went on to win the Test after following-on and ultimately won the series. The win at Kolkata also ended Australia’s record 16 Test match-winning streak.
For his six-wicket haul against England at Oval in 1971, B S Chandrasekhar was adjudged Indian bowler of the Century.
Sunil Gavaskar led team which won the mini-World Cup (Bensen & Hedges Cup) in Australia in 1985 was rated the Team of the Century.
The Spirit of Cricket Award was given to G R Vishwanath for calling back England wicket-keeper Bob Taylor after he was given out by the umpire during the Jubilee Test in Bombay. Taylor went to score a hundred and was involved in a match-winning partnership with Ian Botham.
India’s opening batsman of 1930-40 Mushtaq Ali was given Wisden’s Special Achievement Award.
