Kamran Abbasi calls Shoaib Malik an 'intellectual lighweight'

Kamran Abbasi, in his blog at cricinfo, has this to say about our new captain:

“Today we stand in optimism behind Shoaib Malik, an intellectual lightweight—see Nadia Khan’s interview if you disagree—but an enthusiastic heavyweight.”

Does anybody know which interview he’s referring to? Nobody expected Malik to be intellectual, but as long as he plays his cricket right, it’s fine by me.

Re: Kamran Abbasi calls Shoaib Malik an ‘intellectual lighweight’

I think he is talking about this one… I haven’t seen it myself…however what difference does it make if he isn’t einstein…we need a sportsman…duh…

Re: Kamran Abbasi calls Shoaib Malik an 'intellectual lighweight'

Kamran Abbasi, the cricinfo blogger is himself an intellectual lightweight, read his blogs where he was predicting Pakistan would win the world cup. Who in his right mind thought that but Abbasi?

Re: Kamran Abbasi calls Shoaib Malik an 'intellectual lighweight'

Actually, I'd aggree with him. I have seen that interview. In that, to a lot of questions that were being asked, Shoaib Malik was giving pretty vague answers to a point where I, for one, thought, that he didn't have "any" say in selection matters or, anything.

Re: Kamran Abbasi calls Shoaib Malik an 'intellectual lighweight'

Often Miandad was judged based on his intellect (when he is speaking). A player should be judged by his game & game plan. Miandad scores very high on these and I hope the same from Malik. I have some doubts though, based on his history of throwing a match.

Re: Kamran Abbasi calls Shoaib Malik an 'intellectual lighweight'

beggars can't be choosers. we have no other options given the intellectual leavel of the team. AndhoN may kaana raaja. Shoaib kaa bajay gaa baaja.

Re: Kamran Abbasi calls Shoaib Malik an 'intellectual lighweight'

Let the games begin. Malik's first priority must be to justify his place in the team as a test batsman. If he does that everything-else would be taken care of

GA Yar, the thead is about Malik and you are talking about Akhtar

Re: Kamran Abbasi calls Shoaib Malik an 'intellectual lighweight'

Yeah Kamran Abbassi should judge the level of intellect in other people!

This is the guy who thinks that coming up with "The Pakistani Spin" as the title for hsi blog is some kind of intellectual achievement. He's also the guy who campaigned for selecting Tullah players as openers, and then berated the selection committee for picking them after their predictable failure. And this Einstein also advocated having two vice-captains in a team with a long history of ego clashes and captaincy conflicts.

Yeah, he ahs the intellectual high ground to judge Shoaib malik.

I saw the video he was talking about. Shoaib Malik was a bit shy with Nadia Khan, which is to be expected given HER overwhelmingly (sometimes obnoxious) aggressive questions and Malik's middle class background. AFter all he's just a Pakistani boy from a middle class Sialkot family who probably hasn't spent much time around bold Pakistani girls. He was just overwhelmed by Nadia, that's all.

Re: Kamran Abbasi calls Shoaib Malik an 'intellectual lighweight'

Actually, I saw that interview too (part 1) on YouTube. Kamran Abbasi made it sound like Malik would come off looking like a complete idiot. To my surprise, the reality was quite the opposite...Shoaib didn't do bad at all (and I'm not his biggest fan).

Re: Kamran Abbasi calls Shoaib Malik an ‘intellectual lighweight’

Yes I think overall Malik was n’t that bad. He will improve with time and experience. He’s still in the learning phase of his career and I expect him to do a lot better than Inzi (very dull, same opening and ending lines, never said anything original or intelligent) at post match interviews. Kamran Abbasi is a bit over-emotional and inconsistent in his views. Osman Samiuddin on balance writes better articles at crcinfo IMO

Re: Kamran Abbasi calls Shoaib Malik an 'intellectual lighweight'

But Malik has replaced an "intellectual featherweight" and a nose-digging one at that, so it is an improvement.

Re: Kamran Abbasi calls Shoaib Malik an 'intellectual lighweight'

Who cares if Malik is not good in front of media. As long as he can help us win games, it should be enough.

Re: Kamran Abbasi calls Shoaib Malik an 'intellectual lighweight'

^ I disgree

A captain who repeatedly makes an a** of himself in front of the camera can seldom command genuine respect of his team-mates. Who know what the players really thought of Inzi off camera? So it's no longer just enough leading from the front as captain. You must be atleast presentable as captain i.e. say something intelligent and original at post match interviews, a good sense of humour always helps.

Re: Kamran Abbasi calls Shoaib Malik an 'intellectual lighweight'

I think, all of us are barking against a wrong tree.

We should be asking these questions...

Does a player need intellectual ability to play cricket effectively?

Does he need intellectual ability to plan and come up with winning strategy to win the games for the country?

Does he need intellectual ability to rally his team around him and make them play cricket which would provide positive results?

As far the interview... the person interviewing him isn't so bright either so maybe he was just playing dumb.

Re: Kamran Abbasi calls Shoaib Malik an 'intellectual lighweight'

^ Well you don't need to be an intellectual to say something commensensical and intelligent at post match interviews. It's deeply irritating and frustrating when your captain starts and ends an interview with the same lines day in and day out

We don't have to go very far for an Asian example. Jayawardene was quite impressive at post-final interview. He spoke intelligently and sensibly. That's all we are asking for.

Re: Kamran Abbasi calls Shoaib Malik an 'intellectual lighweight'

There are examples of intellectual heavyweights like Imran Khan. While a great players does nt need to be einstien, a great captain can use some intellect.
