kahmosh paani (silent waters)

ok guys! I was walking by a carlton theatre (toronto) downtown when I saw this movie "khamosh paani) playing in english theatre. Any one who dont know the story, its about a young guy getting involved with the political movements during zia-ul-haq days of politician. Anyone who has seen it, I want to your opinion . Is it worth it to watch in theatres???

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0357283/

faisaljawed007 i have seen it and really enjoyed the movie, its well worth a watch, i like the way they talk in the movie, its kinda cute! brilliant acting and shows that pakistanis can make great movies. go watch it!!

I have serious issues with this film. Though as a film it may be really good, it's quite obvious the film maker followed a certain predetermined thought pattern/agenda, which would make it appealing to certain quarters in the world today. Not a genuine film making attempt. Same is the case with the much accaimed Bengali Film "Matir Moina' [The Clay Bird].

isn't kamosh pani an indian movie
it also stars a pakistani actress who comes into dramas and also indian actress kiron kher

Why do we have to force these indians into every thread? there's not one thread on this forum which is india free.

no laiba je it is not an indian movie, the director is a pakistani and although she is married to a sri lankan and currently in mumbai she is made the movie for the pakistanis she has also made other documentries each one tied closely to issues within or surrounding pakistan or pakistani's. khamosh pani was shot entirely on pakistani soil and has won an award

oh thanx all of you Maliaka, bollybuster and Laiba for your reply.

ok so maliaka u said this movie is filmed in pakistsan....wow never knew dat. And won an award....have to see it now. oh just curious if u know .......how come it was never publicized like other movies?

Laiba are you talking about the woman who played the mother role?

kiron kher’s post-film interview was far from pleasing to the ear, she said khamosh pani touches on the zia era when fundamentalism was sky high in pak cos he made women cover their heads.

following mazhab is fundamentalism according to her. tomorrow someone might say being a pakistani is a disgrace!!!. make wat u wanna make of that…

I opened a thread about this movie a few months back

This film gives a totally sceptical, one sided perspective. It will never find any mainstream acceptance in Pakistan. It knows its audience and it has played well to them, getting all those prizes at film festivals etc. Let's have some movie on an evangelical youth gone astray, now. And who on Earth is Kirnon Kher? DId all those wonderful female artistes in Pakistan like Sabah Parvez, Rubina Ashraf etc. disappear into thin air? Why can not we make something that is totally our own?

it was a great movie, watch it!! :)

"Khamosh Pani" all the way from Pakistan:
[Cinema India, Bollywood]: New Delhi, Dec.1 : Pakistani director Sabiha Sumar's "Khamosh Pani (Silent Waters) examines the destructive extremism and personal betrayals behind her country's independence - but three decades later.

The film was screened in New Delhi's PVR Saket cinema hall on Tuesday evening.

Khamosh Pani is set in 1979 in Pakistan, when General Zia-ul-Haq took control of the country and stoked the fires of Islamic nationalism.

Ayesha, a Muslim woman who gets by on her late husband's pension and teaching the Quran to young girls, invests her hopes in her beloved son Saleem.

But when Saleem takes up with a group of Islamic fundamentalists just as a group of Sikh pilgrims come to town, Ayesha's haunted past turns her present life upside down.

Films and music have always recieved popularity across the borders and simmilar is expected from this one.

Shrinagar Films will be releasing the film across theatres in Jullender, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Kolkatta and Chennai on December 3.

Director Sabiha says it is curosity which actually builds up the desire to see what our neighbouring nation has to offer.

"I think if we ban anything, like if the Pakistani films are banned here and Indian films are banned there, then it builds up the curosity and desire to see that film. That's what created the desire the Pakistani films here and that Indian films there. In terms of culture certain parts of India and Pakitan share cultural roots, such as Punjab and Bengal. But, where is the culture affinity between Tamil Nadu and Baluchistan and NDFP and Maharashtra? There is not any. So I would say it is basically a political issue which two countries have to solve and they have to have the vision to the future as friends rather as enemies, said Sabiha.

Winner of 14 International Awards including Best Film (Golden Leopard, Festival Grand Prize, Locarno, Best Actor (Female) and Best Direction, "Khamosh Pani" is one of the most awaited films of this year.

"Come and see the film. The film has been written about extensively, it is a very wonderful film. It has won many awards as the best film and I have got three best actress awards for it all over the world. It has got 14 international awards. It is a very moving film, a very strong film, a very quiet film and a very important film. The story of the film I am not going to tell you because it is a wonderful story," said Kiron Kher.

Another talent, which we will get to see is of Shilpa Shukla playing the role of Zubeida, Saleem's love intrest, who too suffers when her beloved takes to the path of radical religion.

Shilpa believes more films should be made on this theme so that the younger generation can become aware of the pain when borders were redrawn.

"Certainly they do and I think there should be more films dealing on such issues and of course it does . It changed me as an individual..I feel that every Indian feels somewhere, we have all read about the partition and we know that it happened. But, by watching these films you realise how deep their tragedy had happened there," said Shilpa.

The film's distributor Shyam Shroff expects a raging applause for this film.

Shyam Shroff, the film's distributor said, "It is difficult to say what would be the fate of the film at the box office. But it would be a very highly discussed movie. People will sit and talk about it and that is what I want actually."

Re: kahmosh paani (silent waters)

I find this film very well made. It shows the problem of manipulating emotions for political interests by misusing relegious feelings and personal economic background.
But nevertheless the songs made for this films were mostly cut off.
These songs are as well in Urdu as well in Punjabi.

I like these songs but I cannot understand tehm all because of lacking the written down lyrics.
So if you can advice where to get these lyrics from I'd be very obliged.
