Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

For all the complaints in Pakistan about the cost of flour, it costs almost twice as much in Afghanistan because Pakistani farmers, unlike Afghan farmers, grow wheat instead of narcotics. (And then Afghans have the gall to blame Pakistan for their problems…)

Stopping exports should help lower the price of flour to Pakistanis, though an unfortunate side effect will probably be to condemn a very large number of Afghans to starvation. Oh well… the best interests of Pakistanis are more important than those of Afghans.

QUETTA, Jan 15: Afghanistan closed its border with Pakistan on Tuesday, stopping all kind of traffic and movement of people.

The Afghan border authorities suddenly closed the Friendship Gate at Chaman and deployed extra army personnel.

They said the border would remain closed for an indefinite period.

Afghan border commander at Spin Buldak Abdul Raziq Panjsheri said various cities and towns in southern Afghanistan were facing an acute shortage of flour after wheat and flour supply from Pakistan was stopped.

He said the situation would worsen if the ban was not lifted.

“Border with Pakistan at Chaman would remain closed till the decision to ban the supply of wheat and flour is withdrawn,” he said.

Hundreds of trucks and other vehicles carrying various goods, other than wheat and flour, were struck on both sides of the border.

Fuel supply to Nato forces was also suspended as dozens of oil tankers were also stopped at Chaman.

Thousands of Pakistani and Afghan businessmen in Vesh and Chaman could not cross the border.

Frontier Corps IG Maj-Gen Saleem Nawaz said the Afghan officials closed the border because the FC had stopped smuggling of wheat and flour and the Pakistan government had also stopped their export through private channels.

“We will not allow smuggling and export of wheat and flour to Afghanistan at any cost,” he said, adding the decision had been taken in view of shortage of wheat and flour in the country.

“Our own people are not getting enough flour due to its smuggling across the border,” Gen Nawaz said, adding that the FC was allowing supply of wheat by the World Food Programme to Afghanistan.

He said the supply of wheat sent by the Pakistan government under its commitment to Kabul was not being stopped.

“The Afghan government has not informed us about the closing of its border,” the IG said.

It is learnt that the price of wheat has gone up manifold in southern Afghanistan.

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

Well, I am sure people that are talking about flour shortage in Pakistan will not mind if the flour stays in pakistan.

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

Thats what we should have done, long time ago, to stop infiltration of terrorists.... glad they are doing it, though for different reasons.

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

Hopefully this turns idiot Pakistanis into seeing the true face of Taliban and Al Qaeda who are absolutely no friends of Pakistan but rather Imperialists who want to impose their will on the Pakistani people

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

Like the US of A? I can only agree with this.
I hope we will see some matters solved, I had enough of all those crises.

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

Lalaay, I always wonder what stop IsI to blast a bomb in karzai chaddi.

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

Hahaha, poppy takes little effort and pays more you know .

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

Pays more for the farmer, but a country can't eat poppy.

Hopefully the Afghan poppy farmers and their families will feel some hunger with flour supplies being cut, and so assuming that they live through to next growing season they will choose to grow food instead of narcotics to export to Pakistan and beyond.

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

^I wished the decision would only be in their hands to control the poppy plantation and manufacturing.

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

Whose hands is it then in?? Their Landlords??Aren't they Afghani then??

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

The demand for Mules, Camels and horses just went up to carry the wheat across the porous border............:)

Will keep a lot of Baluchis and Pakhtuns busy smugling food across on the border not by Trucks but by beasts of burden.........:)

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

Mashallah. I understand the Camel sales were not as good as previous years during the Eid-ul-Zua. Good to see they will be utilised for an alternative use and help the Camel sellers get some revenue.

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

Eventually there is a difference between farmers + family and landlords + government.

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

Your logic doesn't make any sense, as usual. Instead of wishing hunger for poor Afghan families you should ask the Paki authorities to prevent smuggling in which they themselves are involved.

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

Isnt it a besti though? that the country who took refuge from Pakistan has slammed their doors on our faces even when open doors never did any good :S

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

How would the Americans react if the fuel supply to Nato forces stops for good.? Would they stop throwing their monthly alms into the kashkol of Pakistan immediately?

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

*^ they will get a lesson without Pak support they can't even move in afganistan. Rest assured money is using on weapons for Indian threat. Long may the money train continue.....

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

It will continue for some time but at the cost of Pakistan's internal security which I am sure you won't mind.

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

and wh would they do that - do you know when of the best jobs in pakistan is to work for customs end excise?

Re: Kabul closes Pak-Afghan border in protest over Pakistani flour export ban

If the Afghan's didn't grow it, corrupt government officials couldn't get fat off the smuggling of it. The afghan farmers being at the root (literally speaking) of the problem get no sympathy from me. Their greed and desire to grow the most profitable crop (opium) instead of something they can eat has come home to roost.
