Kabhi hum khubsoorat they

Mahwish was very excited… She woke up early in the morning and started preparation for the school. She was student of class one.
She sported a wide grin on face, while remembering last night’s events and talk with her baba …

Last night she insisted on having a geometry box same as her brother’s (who was in grade six). Bieng the youngest and darling child in the family, she knew that she can exploit love of her father.

Baba ! I need to make oranges and flowers in my drawing class, I cant draw them properly without parkaar (compass). She tried to convince her father into buying the geometry box…

*But beta ! these things are for older kids like your brother, I will buy you, once you get a little older… *father tried to convince her … but in-vain

*No baba, I want it now or never !! *she said firmly and went outside with a gloomy face.

It was just enough to soften the heart of father who later agreed buying her a new pencil box, with picture of Barbie outside and a brand new rubber(eraiser) which smells like Jasmine…just to supplement quite a number of pencils, sharpeners; she already had in her school bag

She was happily, walking towards the school holding father’s hand. The aniticipation of new stuff was great, and so was the pride, she would feel while showing off the new pencil box to her friends… And Zareen !

Zareen used to make her feel jealous, because she had all the new and shiney stuff. Mahwish can’t wait to reach her friends, the National anthem and prayers in the assembly seemed to have taken longer than usual.

nice..

Re: Kabhi hum khubsoorat they

waiting for the next part.

Re: Kabhi hum khubsoorat they

Its nice !

Zareen said with an expressionless face. Mahwish was surprised, she expected something meaner. Zareen looked generous today as she did not try to belittle her by displaying her own fancy gadgets, given to her by her chacha, when he last visited Pakistan from England.

The first period was of Urdu, mostly oral. Miss Asifa had told them few days ago that all of them need to recite hamd and Naat, so she could select a few girls for school's function. Mahwish was not much interested... She was waiting for drawing's period, which was obviously her favorite period. She had all the required tool for making all kind of stuff.

For drawing circles, she had bangles of different size; color pencils, rubbers and everything. She used to make beautiful fruits, flowers, sceneries, but ...
She was unable to draw butterfly ! She loved butterflies. It was her favorite pastime to run after butterflies in the meadows near her home.

Re: Kabhi hum khubsoorat they

Mahwish woke up and felt unbearable pain in her shoulders and forehead ... she was hearing continuous shouting and screaming comming from little girls

'Open your eyes ...
please wake up ...
I am dying ...
pain in my leg...
Ammi ! Baba ! somebody pull us out of here !!'

Mahwish heard all those screams and pleas, she tried to realize what is going on. She and some other girls were lying on the ground, the roof made of concrete, which used to be way above their head, firmly placed on walls. Now it was on the desk and on the ground, in form of rubble... She could only see her classfellows, some lying on the ground some on the benches... And Maryam ! She was just sitting on the bench like in class and her head... Oh God !!! her head was not visible under the rubble.

She started screaming. She was terrified. There was pain and there was horror ... all the little girls, they could do nothing but cry... and call their mother and father for help.

Some time later when the cries turned into whimpers ... little girls had exhausted their energy in screams, now there were only tears. Mahwish tried to remmeber....

Re: Kabhi hum khubsoorat they

Miss Asifa just finished the roll call. And announced the names of the girls who will recite hamd and naat today. Mahwish was relaxed, her name was not in the list. It means that she can practise drawing, during whole period.

She started to dig out her drawing book and stuff, from her school bag and started to arrange it on the desk. She was feeling a new vigour. She felt that she can draw the most beautiful butterflies today... She envisioned the scenery near her house... there is a stream a calf and Cows, birds, flowers and ...

but she felt it was difficult for her to draw so many things properly. She would rather draw flowers, birds and butterfly.

She was just trying to make her mind up that all of a sudden everything started shaking. Teacher told them "it is a 'Zalzala' start reciting Kalma ! it will soon slow down". But it became furious, cracks appeared on walls, loud and scary voices came from everywhere, teacher told them to get down under the desk, Mahwish ducked her head under the desk and she did not remember what happened later...and then.... she woke up from loud screams.

Re: Kabhi hum khubsoorat they

There was already very dim light under the rubbles and with the passage of time darkness prevailed everywhere... girls had no experience of staying in total darkness with no elder around, they felt heart wrenching fear...

They were seven girls who were talking or crying. Rest, they had no idea. Either they were severely injured or dead. The girls tried to come closer in order to remain warm and avoid fear. They started talking ...

"My amma said, those who die like this, they go to heaven. There are rivers of milk and honey and toys and swings in heaven...." Hifza told them

"I wish i could go to heaven, my leg is broken !!! Ahhhhh " Gulnaz was crying with pain

*"My brother is in army they have tanks and big truck, they will pull us out of here " *Zareen tried to console herself, more than anyone else.

Mahwish was waiting for her baba, she believed that he would come to find her and with the help of other people they would dig them out. She was praying to Allah that he gets here sooon. She could not imagine sleeping in such a scary place, she thought she would die of fear.

There was some food in school bag of few girls, some girls who could move, tried to gather food and ate it. some of them kept talking and weeping remembering their homes and families and others due to pain.

Mahwish woke up and heard the Azan. She looked around; all the girls were sleeping. She had no idea when she or other girls dozed off at night.

Mahwish remained still, and prayed from the depth of her heart to Allah that her family should find her today and she could go home.

When the sun rose and sunlight started to brigten the remains of classroom, all the girls woke up.

Mahwish felt hunger and her stomach started twitching ... she remember her daily breakfast. Pratha, fried in desi ghee, honey with fresh butter, milk and eggs...

She gluped saliva, which was like someone opened tap in her mouth, and filled it with water.

Re: Kabhi hum khubsoorat they

^:teary1: Nice story Codey. I’m thinking perhaps the girls that were trapped in the school in the earthquake hit area, must’ve felt no less than what u’re narrating here.

Re: Kabhi hum khubsoorat they

The girls felt presence of people, outside the wreckage of classroom. They all got very excited. God has answered their prayers, people have come to rescue them !

They started shouting, screaming for help. but it seemed that they were quite far from girls ...

*Why they are not answering ? *asked Gulnaz, who was desperate for help as she lost her leg and the pain was unbearable for her

Let us try again , Zareen said

"BACHAO !! " "NIKALO " (Help, get us out)

They shouted. But the result was no different.

They again started crying like children. Girls started calling their mother, father, uncle and brothers .... but no one was able to hear them ... they were trapped inside the rubble. No one was there to console them, they were themselves too young to console each other, so all of them acted upon the basic human instinct.

They got scared, they remebered their home, family parents... they wept and wept and cried from pain... but there was no one to hear them.

At second day's sunset, they all looked pale... hunger, thirst, fear or pain, all feeling were jumbled up on the face of these little angels.

Mahwish cleaned her nosal secreation with her sweater, although she was of school going age, but at home she never used to pick her nose by her self, whenever she felt any need she would go to her mother, father or any elder.. they would do the service, happily.

There appeared a line on the cheeks of the girls due to continuous flow of tears, and now even the tears had dried up. They cried but there were no tears

Re: Kabhi hum khubsoorat they

3rd dawn broke with the same brightness, but gulnaz didn't wake up. It seemed like her pain was over. Mahwish, got fainted and it appeared that she too has lost the battle of nerves ...

Other girls were too weak and exhuasted to even cry, they remained still...

They heard the activity outside, people were talking outside. discussing how to remove debris... The girls were too faint , they could not muster up energy to shout.. They all dozed off in the broad daylight ...
...
..
.
Mahwish was running after kid, trying to hold her in her arms. She cuddled and kissed it, She left it to go to goat mother as it was the her feeding time.
She started to run again she hurled the cattle and went passed and reached her favorite place under the trees. She found butterflies. They flew away, she ran after them and leaped into air, she started floating in the air. She felt weightless ... She was so happy, she could fly ... She started floating beside butterfly. After playing and watching closely, she thought of flying unto the top most branches of tree. there she saw bird's nest. She was fascinated by the sight of new born chicks shouting for food, later she went up, started flying up and away with the birds in the open sky.
