So her story comes to (for now) a bitter conclusion..international outrage the President and Chief Minister intervening..and in the end ..nothing…
The Lahore Court judgment to free all the 12 accused in the Mukhtaran Mai gang rape case has sent waves of shock and raised questions about the security of women and delivery of justice. “I am terribly disappointed,” said a let down Mai Mukhtaran in her reaction to The News hours after the judgment.
She was talking to this correspondent on phone from Meerwala, Jatoi, a small and far off village in district Khangarh, Multan. She said for the last ten days her movements were restricted to Meerwala
“I do not know why my movement has been restricted within the country,” Mukhtaran questioned. She denied plans to settle abroad. “I will never leave my people and my village,” she said, adding that her surroundings were filled with pain and gender injustice and needed efforts to bring a change.
I thought the guys were released a while ago. I remember discussing this here on GS, where Akif pointed out that this is more a failure of prosecutors to build a forceful and compelling case, rather than the judges caving in under pressure.
I think this twist in the case where a police officer changed the whole course of case by investigating in a different angle is good for our judicial and police system.. all were happy when those convicted were handed over severe punishments but no one thought that this was a high media case and govt was in pressure to deliver in no time.. and some innocents would also be trapped and no one will believe them.. its important to punish those who are guilty but its more important that no innocents is punished!
Judges were justified to release them until a solid case with evidence is placed before them rather than a emotional one.. the case in actual was rushed through under international and govt pressures.. rather than saying things for judicial system its an eye opener how police only goes after investigating the presurre cases only.. how common masses are denied with even basic police help..
Case of Mukhtar Mai should be investigating in a proper guide lines, efficiently and timely.. and severe punishment should be given only to guilty persons..
well its not the fault of the judges that they had to let go these men. her defense apparently couldn't prove a thing against them and thus they got freed which is fair in every aspect. built a stronger case and then see what happens.
I was obviously giving too much credit to this country when criticising it’s village tribal councils such as the Panchayat and Jirga; those guys are uneducated, ignorant, unjust and backward but this siht hole of a country’s judicial system is just as bad if not worse.
