Just wondering...

How you explain to Non-muslims why we don’t eat pork…and drink alcohol??

Re: Just wondering...

cuz these are facts of beiin a muslim, cuz that is what our holy book says, that is what we as muslims are tought from childhood and follow ... pork is haram cuz its called a "napaak" animal in the holy Quraan and cuz of its habits and that a pork even eats its children if he gets hungry ...

and alcohol is forbidden cuz u just loose the sence of what is wrong and what is right if u r drunk u could do things u might regret later or u harm anyone, not intentionally but cuz of beeing not on ur rightmind ...

i think these points should definitely be understandable for someone who questions u abt that ... as even the non muslims know what a drunk situation can lead too ...

infact i also do answer that way ... and they understood what i am trying to say and even aggreed ...

Re: Just wondering...

I was born and raised gori, parents of european descent, lutheran (protestant) families. Growing up-, pork was just another type of meat as normal as chicken or beef. And my dad would have a nightly scotch and sometimes my mom would join him and have a cocktail. It was normal and acceptable behavior and we saw no ill effects of either.

The big divide has more to do with misunderstanding the whys and wherefores of this whole thing. A Muslim person is forbidden to drink alcohol and to eat pork because Allah forbade it. End of story. I think many times, the gori/goras dont understand that particular aspect of Islaam. I didnt. It took time and GS, getting to know Muslim people. In my ignorance, I used to think that Muslims frowned upon alcohol because they'd instantly turn into alcoholics which is SO very far from the truth. But that doesnt matter because it is forbidden to them. Allah does not ask much, He asks for prayer, for alcohol abstinence and not to eat pork so you must comply whether pork is healthy or not and whether the occasional beer is OK or not. THAT took me a long time to understand.

I think Muslims can help non-muslims understand these things better when this is explained. And when tolerance is practiced. I mean, alcohol is forbidden to Muslims but that doesnt mean you have to avoid any gathering where its served, you just cannot partake of it for yourself. But its not a big deal to just drink soda, juice or water and let the others do what they do. Refusing to attend at all makes for a rather confrontational situation yeah?

Because their religion forbids drinking alcohol or eating pork........nothing much to explian here.

Re: Just wondering...

Pork and Alcohol* are not healthy at all. Rasool-ul-Allah (saw) told his Ummah not to participate in gatherings which is bad for a 'Muslim' (i.e. places where Alcohol is served, Casinos, Strip Bars etc.)

please inform yourself instead of spreading false information

Thank You

  • except when used as medicine

And I do explain that to them...but then they ask me for more details and why... and I don't want to sound rude to them and turn them off our religion and the beauty and simplicity of it!...so that is why I was wondering what others say to non-muslims in regards to this...

Thanks for the replies...

Re: Just wondering...

U start with "what the F is your problem"

Re: Just wondering…

Here’s an interesting video in which a Christian explains why pork is bad for humans.

http://www.paklinks.com/gs/religion-scripture/364825-why-pork-bad-you.html

Remember that in Islam shrimp and prawn is makrouh tehreemi (not haram but highly disliked) in Hanafi school.

Re: Just wondering...

boi, you missed my point here. First of all, most things taken in careful moderation are not unhealthy. Wine, for instance, taken in moderation, has been shown to actually be beneficial. Pork, when handled and cooked properly (as with any other meat), proides protein and is actually lower in saturated fats than many cuts of beef. This is not to say that I'd ever encourage a Muslim to eat pork or drink wine. But the vast majority of westerners grow up with this. ANYthing taken in extreme is usually harmful. Pork and alcohol, when taken lightly are not. They are forbidden to Muslims and Muslims should not partake. But the divide comes when these fallacies are propagated that at the first sip of a beer, you become an alcoholic. Or you eat a slice of bacon and wake up dead the next day. Or that to go to an office party where people can have alcohol (if they WANT to) is forbidden, its not. You can attend, you can drink soda and you will be welcome to do so...and to avoid such is to to be somewhat rude, condescending and unaccepting. Right and wrong is sometimes dictated by the country and the culture that you choose to live in. So Boi, I'd recommend to you that you avoid living in any western country if you are this adamant and inflexible in your views of what is right and wrong.

this type of response makes the speaker look ignorant, rude and idiotic.

by answering the question politely you'd be helping someone understand islam

Girl

Pork, even taken the slightest piece of it is unhealthy. If you want to eat the dirt of a pig then eat it. No one is stopping you, but coming here (i.e. Boi) down like a big girl is not what GS wants. I don't want to eat a animal which eats it's own children, eats garbage, eats mud and stays in the mud. If you want to eat, eat it. You have to go to Allah and answer him.

I did not say that it is forbidden to partake in such gatherings, I only said it is not recommended by our Rasool-ul-Allah (saw). If you can't live with that and call it somewhat rude, then it is your Problem, not mine!

Second,

we have seen what happened to People who were pious, righteous. It is only a step in such gatherings and they all ended up drinking alcohol and they became alcoholics.

So Girl

If you know nothing about Islam inform yourself first hand and calculate the if's and not only what is right or wrong. I'd also recommend you to refrain from sentences like "Don't live in a western country blablba" garbage. Who are you to tell me where to live? Do you think Islam is a Religion only for Muslims? This is a code of life for the entire world.

I do not take it serious, IGNORANCE is wide spread in this world and you surely belong to this movement of IGNORANCE. This is why I close my eyes and let it go.

GIRL

YOU MISSED MY POINT

next time, watch out. I only mean the good things for you!

Re: Just wondering...

Lets not get rude about it here...thats exactly what this thread is about - the lack of understanding between different peoples.

When you say "You have to go to Allah and answer him" (for eating pork), you have to remember that pork is a completely acceptable food to people of religions other than Islam and Judaism. And therefore, since it is not a religious issue for these people, there is no "anwering to Allah" regarding that. Its the same with alcohol. It is not forbidden to some.

No one will encourage you to consume forbidden things unless they have serious psychological issues and no one will judge you for following the tenets of your faith. In return, you should respect those of other faiths, beleifs and customs without judgement.

When you say "I'd also recommend you to refrain from sentences like Don't live in a western country blablba garbage. Who are you to tell me where to live? Do you think Islam is a Religion only for Muslims? This is a code of life for the entire world."

I didnt mean to tell you where to live, apologies if you took it that way. But when you are so judgemental and vehement about what is acceptable and what is not, then you should live in a place where you will be exposed only to those things. Living in a western society amongst those who you see basically as dirty, garbage-eating sinners is no way to live and no way to spread good feelings about Islam. Islam is not a code of life for the entire world. Different people have different religions which we must all accept. The bloodiest wars ever fought have often come down to difference in religious beleifs and I dont think that this was what God/Allah ever intended. For any of us. If you want Islam to be a code of life for the entire world, you will not accomplish this with guns and force.

Re: Just wondering...

Personally, I think it is due to the fact that prior to the discovery of antibiotics (which is fairly recent), pork many times contained a deadly disease called trichinosis. So indulging in a pork chop was to take your very life into your own hands. It became forbidden because God/Allah did not want His people to die. Pork used to kill people.

Why is this my personal view? Because yes, pigs eat garbage and poop. But so do cows, sheep and goats. Chickens too. Also because I just can't fathom that God/Allah would alllow us to eat only animals that are polite and clean because well, animals are animals yeah? They all do dirty, disgusting things. So what if pigs eat garbage/poop every single day but cows eat garbage/poop twice a week...kwim? Garbage is garbae and poop is poop.

Its been discovered that cows have a disease popularly called Mad Cow. Its deadly, it attacks your brain and it can lie dormant for up to 10 years before the symproms arise with a devastating speed. There is no cure...as there used to be no cure for trichinosis before antibiotics.

My hubby has a different point of view, one which may be more correct than mine. He says that pork is forbidden because God/Allah forbade it. And it is not for us to question. It is for us to obey.

Me? I like more of an explanation of things so my wonderings and conclusions make sense to me. However you slice it though, forbidden is forbidden yeah? You just need to make your peace with these things in whatever way helps you understand I think.

Mamaof3,

you have put it wrong. The thought alone that you or the others eat a animal which is appointed to be in the mud, eat mud and even it's own children. Does that not shock you? The Alcohol which is produced, is it produced that people just take one sip, show their teeth and pass by? No, it's made A) to make money and B) to get you drunk. No one just takes one shot, sip or a glass. Once drunk, you have the desire to drink more and more till you end up as a alcoholic. Some can handle it, most don't even know after 5 years who they were, what they did and which status they had. Alcohol changes your personality alot and something makes me believe that eating Pork changes you as well.

No one is holding his gun and his force on you or on the others so they'd accept Islam. Don't put words in my mouth I never said. I accept it if anyone comes here down and says this is my belief and I'm devoted to my belief. How many different Religions do we have? We have 3 major Religions ** and these have different branches. Islam IS **a code of Life for the entire world and Christianity in it's root leads to Islam. Religion is nothing more than different thinking, because Islam does not say to kill people when they change from Islam to Judaism, because then verses like "There is no compulsory in beliefs" would become abrogated, but the Qur'an is **NOT abrogated like many Ulema wanted to make us believe. I want to kill and I put it in the shoes of a Religion, that is easy to do. Very Easy.

  • Isa (as) was sent to the children of Israel. He was an Israelite and not an Christ or whatever. Don't even for what Christ stands. I guess, just to justify adultery, alcohol, eating pork this Branch developed itself and became an Religion. I don't consider it a Religion. Adultery is forbidden in Judaism, I heard that they are allowed to drink Alcohol only on special occasions, but I think they are not AND they are not allowed to eat Pork.

Christianity has two branches. Catholics and the Protestants. I saw a commercial of the Protestants and it really shocked me. You see Musa (as) coming back with the ten commandments. He comes to his people and says "I have a good and a bad message. The good news are, I was able to negotiate less than ten commandments with God out. The Bad news are: Adultery is still forbidden."

When he says that you see the People boo Musa (as) out.

Look where we have come down

I want to end with a quote of Hakan Nesser, the famous crime novel author from Sweden

Man proposes, God disposes

Goodbye*

Yes! :-)

Just when you said above pork is allowed in Christianity and Judaism (people of religion other than muslims) as a general comment that's where there is some confusion.

Judaism does not allow pork. Some Christianity sects do not believe in eating pork, like the 7th day Adventists.

Regarding consuming alcohol there is also seems to be divide in Christianity. Not sure of Judaism. Need to check.

Even in Islamic early days alcohol was not prohibited till some time later.

I don't ever remember having to explain any further than saying that alcohol and pork are forbidden for us.

Re: Just wondering...

^

you have to explain to some, though.

Re: Just wondering...

Big dude.
not every thing in Islam is put us on test or to test our will.
Some orders are for practical reasons. Some things ppl from modern west will never understand. Since they have such strong infrastructure and some real advance technology.

Lets take the example of premarital relations.
It sounds funny to Westerners-- With all their STD prevention education, welfare for single/young mothers etc etc.

But
If you go into aids torn area in Africa and tell ppl
We don't have aids in Muslims counties and tell them its not because of superior health care system its because of no-sex rule. PPl in Africa would understand.

Im not to sure but pig, I think is, on top of list of animals who CAN CARRY bacteria which can HARM human.
I have seen that chart but don't remember correctly. Don't quote me on that.

But I guess pork is forbidden for those reasons.

PlayStation:: when I said ppl from west. I didnt mean mama, I meant all the children whos' only source of education/knowledge is with in West.

Re: Just wondering...

I don't think there is any need to get emotional Bigboi. People do drink one or two alcoholic drinks and not all drink it to get drunk.

There is no 'known' scientific basis of not eating pork these days either. There are lots of fatty, harmful meal people eat which is halal (Not allowed in islam by the way in general).

Religions do not need scientific reasoning either.

It is up to people if they do it or don't.
