Just out of interest?

Does the Pakistan Army or any other Armed Forces for that matter still operate the Chest pump test?

Back in my days it was a preliminary test before selection of Elite Sipahi units mainly for Light Infantry roles but Pakistan as most Asian armies tends to let its Light Infantry fight as Elite Heavy Units fight in other countries.

I know that the Chest Pump rule is no longer used by the British Armed forces in fact the British Army requirements since 1844 have not listed it and only some Regiments such as the Coldstreamers and the Old Dozen were required to use this method back in the Napoleonic era.

For those who dont know what I am refering to…

In the old Pakistan Army up till 1999 Elite Light Infantry troopers were required to do a minimum of 12 pull ups for selection. In the UK armed forces the requirment is 6.

The Chest Pump is a requirment for all troopers fighting in Light units required to keep time and march to more than 180 beats a minute and to be able to inflate ones chest to an extra 2 inch depth and hold for half a minute.

The chest pump test was alsoe to select troops who would be good for the Northern Mountain divisions and obviously the altitude needs.

Also the other main reason for this test was to see if recruits had any lung weakness such as that caused by disease, over smoking or Tiburculosis.

So anyone know if this fitness test still stands and can anyone pass it here… hats off to all of you who know what I mean :hat:

Re: Just out of interest?

I suppose with so many simpler ways of detecting weaknesses the role of that test has diminished? And of course there are other tests nowadays.

I can do 15 pull-ups/chin-ups with ease and then I start losing form. I’m pretty big and heavy though so I think I do a pretty good job.
I can hold my breath with my chest fully inflated for just under 2 minutes so not that good. :o
Marching to 180bpm is just ‘double time’. I haven’t done that in a long time bru, memories! :hehe:

Re: Just out of interest?

Following in the current Physical Standard from Pak Army. You have to clear it for next phase :)

(a) 1.6 Km Run 8.5 minutes (b) Push Ups 15 repetitions in 2 minutes (c) Sit Ups 15 repetitions in 2 minutes (d) Chin Ups 3 repetitions in 2 minutes (e) Ditch Crossing 7'.4" x 7'.4" with a depth of 4'

Re: Just out of interest?

Thats still very good man. Your not that heavy I think if your muscles can manage 15 pull ups that proves you aint that heavy :p JK
As for double time memories you know back in my day they made us do that stumbling run for hours as we barged through the back of what is Ayub Park RawalPindi... or as we used to call it Leopard country. Though never actually saw any Leopards just tracks at Ayub Park... apparently there have been some attacks there though.

Yeah that seems a lot more thorough than it used to be and standards have gone up too I guess. Not that guys in the past were any weaker mind you I bet we could have still completed the newer tests but at least it goes to show what levels things are at. Thanks for sharing. :)
