Regardless of all the political ramifications and debates.... from a purely logistical stand-point it is quite difficult to get rid of a suicidal person carrying a load of explosives around himself.
You can't just walk up to him and arrest him or shoot at him. He will blow up in either case killing/injuring all those near him.
but the point is this that there were reasons that he was willing to be mistreated that inhumanly.
he was probably well aware of the fact that how isreali treat their prisoners.
