spock mairee jaan, my point is that call the music whatever, but it does originate from the same roots as rock. Rock is something which is classic in my books, or very few artists have that 'soul' to bring out the true rock..there are few..but not many.
as far as junnoon goes, my knowledge is less than zilch, and whatever is not original just does not interest me..if they can mix some lead with tabbalas or whatever, then good for them..but it will never be categorized as rock music, because it just ain't

Outlaw bhai thanks for ur response. Alot of us here are not big fans of the rock you might be referring to. I know what you mean by 'classical or contemporary rock' that you hold in esteem though.

Well, if they cant be original, than nothing can be. Besides, they dont call their music just rock, they call it 'sufi rock', however, like all other good bands, they recently experimented and diverted from their usual cup of tea in their new album.
tell you something interesting, not sure if you know a singer named amir saleem. He happens to be an accomplice, i guess we both are from multan..anyway, it was back in my college days in teh US, and he came to visit. I took him to a local fraternity party/born fire, and amir just picked up his guitar and started jamming; some songs in urdu and some in english..but he totally electrified the audience; maybe since everybody was just drunk and having a good time..but, it's one of those nights, i can never forget, and where i can say that a pakistani artist just totally rocked..it was one heck of a live performance..

Outlaw bhai... I know who Aamir Saleem is (I even know his brother who was an A-levels teacher at Beaconhouse), but no offense, he sucks big time (as a singer), I mean have you heard his songs, or seen his videos? Hes just one of the people who have remained in the music scene for quite some time, but just survived with PTV coverage support. I wont even compare him to secondary Pakistani vocalists, let alone big vocalists.
Spock, how come you always become so defensive when it comes to Junoon? Some people like them, some don’t. I love Madonna, but lots of people think she’s the anti-christ. If there were never any differing opinions, the world would be a boring place.
I went to the Junoon website in order to see if i was being too harsh, seeing as I've only really heard one song - Sayoni, or something like that.
I listened to bits of the new album and well, to be fair, as musicians they aren't too bad. But doing a rock song in urdu just sounds plain WRONG! Soory people, I just don't accept rock songs in that language, fan base or no. It's an abomination and nothing less.
Amir Saleem??? Pathetic performer. He actually sang in English and people enjoyed it? Did they realise it was english and not some foreign language? His english sucks as much as his voice and music. You could have a parade march to his songs. Are you sure it was Amir Saleem and not Amir Zaki?

Yar, then dont call it rock... Btw, the clips that you listened to were low mono quality ones. If you have time, listen to 'Ghoom Tanna' from their new album, and let me know what you think about it.
Xtreme, I agree with you on the music bit. The music played by Junoon is absolutely fantastic. I don't like it when they sing though. :p I guess it's the songs ... I like a handful of them only (Sayonee, Sawan - or whatever that song is called and Pappu Yaar). Overall, I just think I'm more of a Strings kinda girl.
P.S. Fayz, comparing Junoon to the likes of U2 is simply wrong. If any Pakistani group is to be compared to them, I would say Strings simply cause of the melody of the guitar. It is very 'The Edge'. Khair, they also remind me of The Lighthouse Family (a British pop group) which is nothing like U2 .... so what do I know. :p

Well, most of the critics these days are saying thier music isnt good, some even said their new album lacked quality, but most of them agree on Ali's strong vocals. Pappu yar, the song you like is nothing but a demonstration of Ali's powerful vocals. I was in Junoon's dressing room once, and Ali was brushing his vocals before the concerts, and he changed his pitch so remarkably!

Well, we just organized a strings concert in chicago, and they messed up bigtime with their guitaring, despite having Adeel. They are not live material. About two to three hundred people came to their concert in a city like Chicago.

I just listened to it. You were right, it's not bad, quite trippy music but here's the thing - that song isn't really rock music at all! it's more like a dreamy pop song. Sort of like Blur or Oasis. I still say that proper rock music sounds wrong in urdu.
Mehnaz,
I will have to listen to some Strings stuff now to see if you have good taste or this was just a one off :p
Give Junoon credit where it's due though, even though they sing stupid stuff, they have done a fair bit to promote a positive image of Pakistan so kudos for that.

That song (ghoom tanna) was kinda different, from what they usually do. If you want to listen to fast paced music, then there is my favourite song 'Lal Meri Patt', you might have even heard it before, as other artists sung that one too, including the great Abida Parveen. That song really lights up their concerts, and is usually the startup song. Btw, alot of their famous songs are actually coming from people like Baba Bulleh Shah, Iqbal and Ghalib, so we cant really call it stupid, atleast the meaning of the songs.
As for strings, if you can get your hands on 'ser ki yeh pahar', that would probably be their best song to date, even though its pretty old.

I love the songs Pal and Mera Bichraa Yaar by Strings. Both on their most recent CD (I think). X, try and listen to those songs. :)

Have you tried the oldies? Dur and Ser Kiye Pahar?
Just finished seeing the concert, incredible performance... However, UK junoonies arent as wild as the US ones... Also, Salmans string broke in one of the songs, and Ali Azmat carried the song with his magical vocals, until he got it fixed.
