I’ve always wanted to know the purpose of the Jumma Khutbah, The Imam gets up after everone has prayed their 4 rakhat sunnat of jumma prayer, during khutbah he gives a speech, or recites something in Arabic, He normally holds a stick in one of his hand, sometimes he reads from a book and sometimes recites from his heart,
I think the khutbah normally relates to what has been stated in the jumma bayaan (speech)
Can any1 supply any info on this.

u can try learning arabic and maybe it wud make sense to u....
and if u dont wish to learn arabic, might as well toss the Quran out of the window too, cause there aint any point reading some words in arabic that u dont understand....

they say even if you read the Qur'an without knowing the meaning to it,is a form of Dhikar and there is great reward in it.....yes off course it is more benefical for us if we learn the meaning of the Holy Qur'an...but please don't disencourage people from doing how much they can.
to the original question posted....all these actions that are carried out by the Immam on a jumman are the Sunnah of our Beloved Prophet and the topic that the Immam talks about can vary each time. Most often then not the short talk that is given in English, Urdu, Arabic etc... will then be recited in Arabic which is part of the Khutbah speech. It is important to pay great attention when the Khutbah is going on..understanding it or not.

i, personally, believe that there is no use in reading Quran or any other thing if u dont understand it....
let us encourage ppl to try to understand it....
ppl have been so much used to the hype of getting reward of merely reading the Quran, that they think that is what Quran is meant for....
to read it in the morning and night, to have some verses printed and hung on the walls, to put a sticker or two of verses in the cars, to write some verses on a piece of paper and tie it around the neck or arm and get reward for it....
i, by all means, will discourage this....

Armughal..I did not quite like ur response, Learning Arabic would be very beneficial and would allow me to understand speeches in Arabic
how dare you assume that no body would not like to learn arabic? I have started gathering info on books for beginners and soon insha allah try and learn it...reading is not a difficulty
Have u heared of Quran TILAWAT? you do recieve Sawaab for this..... with the assistance of translation arabic to english it is possible to understand it.....

you will recieve reward if it helps you remember the verses and read them when need be.
I have the Dua for travel in my car and it has helped me to recite it when i'm travelling.

Armugal…I don’t agree…that’s too harsh…do you mean every muslim has to learn arabic if not they should throw the Quran out…
I heard that if you have a Quran at home it’s a good thing…if you can’t read the verses in the Quran but if you do take the book and look at it it’s a good thing…if you take the effort to learn how to read it…it’s even better…and that’s what i believe most muslims are doing.
Quran is the book for every muslim…regardless if hey can read arabic or not…I thought so like that…isn’t it so?..No?
