Jumaraat aur Agarbatti

What is the logic behind burning Agar Batti, after Maghrib on Thursdays.

I thought that this is only prevalent in rural areas, where Jumaraat was an important/ sacred event.

People used to offer nafal besides burning these Agar Batti. I myself observed that our Dadi used to prepare some sweet dish and sent that to Madarsa. There were some graves in graveyard, having place for diya, and people used to visit graves and light those diyas on Thursday night.

Recently, I’ve observed that our neighbors here in Karachi, burn Agar Batti on Thursday evenings.

Re: Jumaraat aur Agarbatti

:hinna: Thanks God.. 28 log to agar batti nahin jalate :hehe:

Re: Jumaraat aur Agarbatti

Lack of knowledge of Islam.
Copy-cat (following ancestor blindly.
Burning 'Agar batti' is for good smell.
'Diya Jalana' in grave-yard is for those 'Charsi' pplz who enjoy 'kash lagana' there. :D

Re: Jumaraat aur Agarbatti

Aaj jumaraat hai.. Kon kon agar batti nahin jalae ga?

Re: Jumaraat aur Agarbatti

no such custom dude…:cobra:

Re: Jumaraat aur Agarbatti

Phir ye agar batti ke ad kiyun bante hain yahan Pakistan main.. :hmmm:

Re: Jumaraat aur Agarbatti

I think jumarat and agarbatti are related to belief that arvahs of family member visit their home on thursday......

aap ka kya khayal hai

Re: Jumaraat aur Agarbatti

The myth behind that is that some people believe that :
On Thursdays the soul is around the area where it lived (near the home) so they want to create a welcoming atmosphere for those souls like those souls would be able to smell that agar batti.

I am not making it up.

Re: Jumaraat aur Agarbatti

Yes Yes Yes… That was the reason I was eager to hear… :hmmm: I did heard this thing.

Re: Jumaraat aur Agarbatti

I think this concept is borrowed from Hinduism like many other practices.

Re: Jumaraat aur Agarbatti

That might be true because , as per my knowledge , this myth is limited to Indopak only.

Re: Jumaraat aur Agarbatti

Why?

Re: Jumaraat aur Agarbatti

these are practices from the jahiliya era...these acts with religious connotations are bida [innovations] and/or shirk. there is no place in Islam for such things. if it's done for cultural reasons, i do understand! :)

Re: Jumaraat aur Agarbatti

Well said Khalil. Exactly its Jahiliat.

Re: Jumaraat aur Agarbatti

I dont know about Agarbatti part but Thrusday after Maghrib is no longer Thursday, its Friday. New islamic day starts at the eve of that day - and we all know that Friday is the most important day for us. Prophet asked sahaba to send durood on him as much as they can on the Day of Friday. Maybe to make the start of that day even more 'islamic', people started using agarbatti. This is also true that Firday being the special day, Allah probably listens to duas more on that day (or I should say, Dua reaches Allah swt faster), so people started to go to graveyards to ask for the maghfirat of their loved one who dies.

Re: Jumaraat aur Agarbatti

Yes I think Thats the logical reason behind this :k:
