Most components of the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) believe that the federal and provincial legislators of Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) will not resign after acceptance of General Pervez Musharraf’s candidacy for the presidential election. They think that Maulana Fazl would not go for total confrontation with President Musharraf, given his track record. They say if the JUI-F lawmakers remained stuck to their seats, Maulana Fazl and Qazi Hussain Ahmed may part company, splitting the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA). The APDM has unanimously decided that its MPs would quit the national and provincial assemblies if Musharraf’s nomination papers were declared valid by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) as a candidate for the office of president to be elected from the sitting legislatures. “I think the time to finally test Maulana Fazl’s sincerity to the APDM’s cause is now just round the corner because the schedule for the presidential election is about to be announced any time, and Musharraf will by vying for his re-election,” an APDM leader told The News.
The resignation of JUI MPAs in the NWFP) means the wrapping up of the provincial assembly as well as the government, one option which Maulana Fazl would never resort to. Similarly, the Balochistan coalition would run into a deep trouble if the JUI MPAs quit. Likewise, the resignation of JUI MNAs coupled with Jamaat-e-Islami lawmakers would seriously dent Musharraf’s re-election. The JUI has nearly 34 MNAs while the Jamaat-e-Islami 24, apart from over half a dozen other MPs of the MMA in the lower house. **Interestingly, no top JUI central or provincial officer-bearer attended the APDM meeting on Sunday that decided that the lawmakers of the grouping’s component parties would hand down their resignations the moment Musharraf’s nomination papers were accepted by the ECP. JUI-F chief Maulana Fazl and Secretary-General Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri were away in Saudi Arabia. The chiefs of its Balochistan and Punjab chapters did not attend the session. Hafiz Hussain Ahmed was present in the meeting, but he is not a central or provincial office-bearer. **
Re: JUI (Fazlur Rehman) MPs may not resign, fears APDM
You would think the PML N and APDM would wise upto Fazl's double dealing, yet they still keep him in the alliance.
Well, Pakistani politics are not based on principles, but you have give credit to Fazlu for being in two shows at the same time. He is both in opposition and with govt at the same time. Not many people can do that.
Re: JUI (Fazlur Rehman) MPs may not resign, fears APDM
Not just Fazlu it seems. Qazi Hussain is more interested in keeping the MMA united even if it means no resignations, rather than do what Nawaz and Imran ask for.
As President Pervez Musharraf continues with consultations on his re-election and the next ruling set up, the government efforts to win the support of Benazir Bhutto and Maulana Fazlur Rehman seem to be successful and a broad understanding between the three parties is on cards. The official quarters here revealed on Friday that contrary to general perception of failed negotiations between the government and PPP, the talks between the two sides are very much on. However, the parleys were being held in a secret manner with full support from the US and UK. Both the major opposition parties, PPP and JUI-F are likely to abstain from the presidential vote instead of resigning from the Parliament and provincial assemblies.
An official said that the two parties took this important decision after being given firm assurance by the President’s Camp through Washington that Gen Musharraf would step down as Army Chief soon after his re-election as president. An opposition leader requesting anonymity, claimed that the two major opposition parties have decided to part ways with the rest of the opposition in order to avert possible imposition of martial law and to ensure the safe transition to true democracy. Meanwhile, President Musharraf continued his consultations and drawing up a strategy with the various political and constitutional aides about the scheduled presidential election. Attorney General of Pakistan Malik Qayyum and some of the ministers met the President in the camp office Rawalpindi. They discussed the constitutional petitions being heard in Supreme Court regarding the dual offices of President Musharraf. In the consultations, the opposition’s strategy on President’s re-election and in this regard the announcement of resignations by All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) figured in the discussions.
Re: JUI (Fazlur Rehman) MPs may not resign, fears APDM
Fazl rehamn is a munafiq, he is a lota!
Why single out fazal-ur-rehman
biggest munafiq is Qazi Sahab who is in GOVT with musharraf in Baluchistan but don't shut his mouth for a sec and keep talking against him!
another munafiq is Nawaz Sharif who for 7 years keep on telling people of Pakistan that HE NEVER SIGNED ANY THING (qasmeen kha chukey heen yee 7 years main) and its only 20 days ago he admitted that he signed the understanding with Sauadi govt
another munafiq is Altab "bhai" who keep on telling stories to poor people of Pakistan
another one is BB who was in negotiations with Musharraf from years and in public their leaders were pretending to be against mushrraf and they kept on denying any negotiations
Re: JUI (Fazlur Rehman) MPs may not resign, fears APDM
Excellent points! :k:
Just look at how none of the parties in the APDM trust each other, and all are practically stabbing each other in the back, while the PPP-P wants none of it.
*The source said that the PML-N also has reservations about Jamaat-i-Islami. *The party leaders suspect that the Jamaat had some understanding with the powers-that-be when it filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court challenging holding of two offices by Gen Musharraf, the source added. They believe to the core of their hearts that the court ruling, likely to be announced next week, would not favour the opposition’s stance, the source said.
*In his opinion, he said, unnecessary criticism of the general should be shunned. Maulana Fazl said the opposition parties heaped praise on the Supreme Court when it gave some judgments against the government. All leaders said the court had come out of the government’s pressure and was working independently. But now that there were signs the Supreme Court might not give a judgment of the opposition’s liking on some petitions against Gen Musharraf, the same parties had started holding demonstrations. *
The PPP leader advised the opposition parties not to rely very heavily on the courts. He pointed out that the apex court had already stated that the parliament should settle its own matters, which clearly meant that the judiciary would not go beyond certain limits.
Re: JUI (Fazlur Rehman) MPs may not resign, fears APDM
I dont want to see any other drama b4 29th. Let 29 come without any drama and see how many of "APDM" members resigne? How many they have if we subtract Maulana Fazal Ur Rehman's members.... 50,60,70...???
Re: JUI (Fazlur Rehman) MPs may not resign, fears APDM
chacha fazloo is having the time of his life. he is an opposition leader. that means lots of food to eat. and that means other perks too, but food is the best. look at his tummy. god has done his Fazal on that tummy. resiging would be suicidal for diesel, literally and figuratively.
Re: JUI (Fazlur Rehman) MPs may not resign, fears APDM
Fazlu deliberately went to Saudi Arabia to avoid being part of the APDM announcement on resignations, and now he can claim he was not part of the decision anway.
