Journalist who criticised the Kremlin found shot dead

And Russia’s fall back to the days of the USSR continue. Ms. Politkovskaya was posined when she tried to go to Beslan to report there, she had received death threats before, and finally she’s been killed, almost certainly as a result of her journalistic work.

Anna Politkovskaya, a prominent Russian journalist known as a fierce critic of the Kremlin’s actions in Chechnya, has been found dead in Moscow.

The 48-year-old mother of two was found shot dead in a lift at her apartment block in the capital.

A pistol and four bullets were found near her body, the Interfax news agency said, quoting unnamed police sources.

She fell seriously ill with food poisoning in 2004 which some believed to be an attempt on her life.

The award-winning journalist fell sick while on her way to report on the Beslan school siege.

A murder investigation is now underway.

Ms Politkovskaya, who worked for the newspaper Novaya Gazeta, was known for exposing rights abuses by Russian troops in Chechnya.

She also acted as a negotiator with the Chechen rebels who held a siege in a Moscow theatre in 2002.

Ms Politkovskaya was killed at around 1630 local time (1330 GMT), Dmitry Muratov, editor in chief of the Novaya Gazeta said.

^^ This will never happen in USA

Re: Journalist who criticised the Kremlin found shot dead

Reminds me of Hayatullah Khan, who was killed by our government, with full knowledge of Musharraf himself.

MARTIN SMITH: Can I bring up the case of the journalist Hayat Ullah Khan? Are you familiar with him?

Pres. PERVEZ MUSHARRAF: No.

MARTIN SMITH: He took the pictures of the U.S. missiles at the Abu Hamza-where he was killed. And those pictures were then shown, and then a few days after that, he disappeared. Journalists’ organizations, his family have all appealed to you to respond, to investigate. Are you familiar with this situation?

Pres. PERVEZ MUSHARRAF: Not at all. And I don’t know at all. We don’t know about it. If he disappeared, well, he may have disappeared. I don’t know it.

MARTIN SMITH: But I am surprised that it’s not something you are aware of.

Pres. PERVEZ MUSHARRAF: No, no. I am not really aware of.

NARRATOR: But after the next question, Musharraf seemed to know something about the case.

MARTIN SMITH: I was told by an American official that he was in Pakistani custody.

Pres. PERVEZ MUSHARRAF: Not at all. That’s not the case.

General Sahab, how could you know he was not in your custody, if you just denied even knowing his name?!

Re: Journalist who criticised the Kremlin found shot dead

^^ I dont think Musharraf killed him or ordered his killing

He was killing by some low level army guy and musharraf decided to keep the matter secret and not blemish the army.....

Re: Journalist who criticised the Kremlin found shot dead

^^

That could have happened in this case too. Ms Politkovskaya exposed low level military officers engaged in war crimes.

Re: Journalist who criticised the Kremlin found shot dead

probably but her killers will never get caught

this kind of thing will never happen in USA

Re: Journalist who criticised the Kremlin found shot dead

yeah.. we 'suicide' our reporters attempting to expose child sex scandals in the White House..

Re: Journalist who criticised the Kremlin found shot dead

Martin Smith and Prince Abbas are reading too much into his answer. What Musharraf is saying that that man is not in Pakintani custody ie denying the charge. However, that doesn't mean that Musharraf or anyone else knows this guy or where abouts.

Mistake that Western journalist make while dealing with non-western leaders is that they apply same standards/rigors of linguistics to their answers. Spoken English in Pakistan or outside the Western hemisphere doesn't conform to the western mores and customs. A man saying that he loves or loved another man is automatically considered homosexual love; a man's intent may be to indicate brotherly love.

How can he know that he is not in Pakistani custody when he does not even know his name?
How is it possible that president of the country does not know the name of a journalist whose murder was all over the news network?

How did you know that?

I'm all for Musharraf's policies, and it may be that his execution was planned by someone else. Let's give Musharraf benefit of doubt. But it does not mean that he pretends dumb when Hayatullah's name is mentioned. Even if he did not order his murder, his hiding Hayatullah's killers is a criminal act.

Re: Journalist who criticised the Kremlin found shot dead

I have a thread on this topic started in Pakistan Affairs section.

Re: Journalist who criticised the Kremlin found shot dead

Targetted killing in USA for various issues is a separate issue, why are you mentioning it in unwanted place? Is anyone talking about what happens in USA here? Stay on topic.
