Hello,
I am heading for University in a year in Canada and I am having difficulties choosing a right career since I want to stay out of the math and science field.
I have thought about either Journalism or Mass Communication, what is the scope for these two career possibilities in Canada?
Can someone also expand a bit more on these careers? Help!
Ideas for other careers options that do not require math and science?
Sorry if you would have asked me about Dubai or Pakistan or US I would have answered but Canada is an unfamiliar territory for me. Even though this is my field.
Well I would first like to tell you that these days Journalism and Mass Communication are very broad terms. You have to first think what kind of specialisation would you want to do within these categories/fields. These days, especially in the US, social media related jobs are on the rise. Social Media itself is on the rise. You can do a degree in Journalism which specialises in New Media or Digital Media as it is liked to be called in few places. It has a lot of scope all around the world these days and even more in the upcoming years as people move from print based journalism to electronic formats/online. You can minor in Marketing Communications which will give you the edge. Not only will you know how to deal with Social/Digital Media but also advertise online. This is really important since these days advertising and media in general is moving to the Internet.
To answer you question, yes it has scope. Depends on what you want to do as well. You can go in to broadcasting and join CNN for example, go in to Photojournalism and join Agence France Presse as a photojournalist (I have worked for AFP under guidance briefly) or you can go in to Social Media and work for any large corporation. These days people are creating special departments for this kind of field/job.
Hey, That helped alot.
Basically what I got from this info is, social media is on the rise, and one of the fields on mass communication?
what other fields can I specialize in since there are so many fields itself in mass comm.
And with a mass comm degree is it possible to get a job with the United Nations?
Well yes, Social Media is part of Mass Communication. Most universities play on the words when awarding degree titles but usually it is Mass Communication degree which then branches out in to Social Media, Journalism, Screen and Sound Production, Photojournalism etc. You will have to research and find out which university is awarding a degree with a specialisation in Social Media/Digital Media/New Media and see what the degree syllabus is for 4 years. If most courses relate to Social Media then you are good to go.
Like I mentioned, Social Media, Journalism, Screen and Sound Production and Photojournalism are the usual most popular ones. I could be wrong though, but after this you specialise by doing a Masters Degree in Journalism or Mass Communication. I myself intend to do one from Columbia, perhaps.
Who knows? If you have a good track record and you have volunteered a lot with charity organisations and other bodies of work which relate to the UN and you have a Mass Comm degree they might hire you as PR? Something like that! :)
Yes, first do what I have told you. Masters is not needed but in today's economy and the increasing competition, it would certainly give you an edge. Do the research, and good luck!

Could you guide me about mass comm education in Pakistan, specifically Lahore. These days, I'm searching it for my cousin sister. There is a well established old school in Punjab University with a TV station and FM radio. But the courses offered are too traditional and out dated, I guess. Moreover, the overall setup is not appreciable because of factors like Islami Jamiat etc. Another option is joining the same programme at Forman Christian College University where there are not any studio facilities however, their coursework, what i have seen, is awesome. Very well rounded and systematic ... I believe
If you have any idea, do tell
