Jordan to consider request to extend auspices
over Iraq

By Ora Coren, Ha’aretz Correspondent

DAVOS, Switzerland - Jordanian King Abdallah would favorably consider an American request to extend the auspices of the monarchy over Iraq for a temporary period after the expected U.S.-led attack on Saddam Hussein’s regime, if the Americans ask, according to senior political sources participating in the World Ecnomic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

According to the estimates of sources in Davos involved in preparations for the war in Iraq, the realistic scenario is that commanders of Iraqi forces will surrender shortly after the U.S.-led attack begins and will come to American military headquarters waving white flags.

The American government will select from among those commanders the leaders of the interim Iraqi government that will rule the country until a more permanent arrangement is found, the sources added.

After an interim period of 2-3 years, they said, if the temporary regime in Iraq asks from the Jordanian monarchy to extend its auspices over Iraq, King Abdallah would likely consider the request favorably. But Jordanian officials examining U.S. overtures on the matter made clear that Abdallah would need to carefully consider the repercussions such a move would have on Jordan’s stability.

King Abdallah said Monday that only “a miricle” could prevent a war in Iraq."

The sources said that the widely held estimate in the international community is that Israel will try to stay outside the conflict with Iraq. But they believe that if Israel is attacked and its population is seriously harmed, there would probably be an Israeli military response.

According to sources, immediately following the war in Iraq, international pressure will resume on Israel and the Palestinian Authority to reach a stage of preparing for the creation of an independent Palestinian state and a final peace agreement within three years, in accordance with the “road map” proposed by the Quartet - the United States, United Nations, European Union and Russia.

awww isn't that sweet. Like a knight in shining armour, one dictator comes to the help of another dictator.

Perhaps it's a win-win situation for Jordan - they get to ensure they will have a large slice of the post-Iraq economic pie. Not certain how accurate it is but as the article points out, the monarchy should be wary of causing further destabilization within Jordan itself.

Well I hope in return he gets to have control of Gaza and the West bank to make Jordan complete...the way it should be. Otherwise we would have some Palestinian state that has no historical precedence.

The soul of Sharif Husayn ibn ‘Ali of Makkah, the father of King Faisal of Iraq, and the Grand father King Hussain would be once again happy. The Jordanian Royals have a history of being sellouts. Their ultimate goal is to ouster the Saudis :)

CH, they will never say yes to anything beyond the river Jordan, Gaza will given back to Egypt.

They would surely prefer the term "peacemakers". :)

I find it hard to believe that with all that exclusive education Abdallah would make a spelling mistake. What is the world coming to?

There seems to be some interesting nuggets which might confirm the lead story in this thread… Lots of conferences with key players and a big package from the World Bank? hmmmm…

German Foreign Minister in Jordan for talks on Iraq
German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer arrived Saturday in Jordan on the third and final part of a regional tour for talks on the US standoff with Iraq and ways of averting a war.

Fischer is expected to hold talks on Sunday with Jordanian Prime Minister Ali Abu Ragheb, followed by a joint news conference ahead of returning home to Berlin later that day.

The Foreign Minister flew into Amman from Cairo where he promised that Berlin would “combine all our efforts” to avert a looming war with Iraq, however warned that he was not sure if diplomacy would be successful.

“We will combine our efforts with the neighbor states, with Arab states, and with our European friends and international friends to find a peaceful solution,” he said in Cairo following talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, according to an AFP report.

However, Fischer also warned Iraqi President Saddam Hussein there was “no more room for tactical games” as the United Nations Security Council prepares to listen Monday to a crucial report by chief weapons inspectors. (Albawaba.com)
