Re: Joomla
Lansing,
Joomla isn't a Course Management system... but a Content Management System... which can certainly be adapted to the former.
That being said, the traditional choice for an Open source Learning Management System is Moodle... which has a lot of functionality of a specialized LMS.
The LMS I've used in the past include WebCT/Blackboard - primarily due to the relatively pain free use not involving site setup and other administrative overhead associated with the open source LMS.
I've also use Ning and PBWiki as an adapted LMS and been pretty happy with them.
Sorry - can't be of more help, but there was a discussion on Joomla in the Computer/Tech forum... try searching for it and may be post your query there.
Re: Joomla
Thanks! Appreciate your input.
Besides Joomla, I am using a Wiki.
Joomla use is part of a course which I would be managing. Its part of my "technology immersion" project also that I have to do this semester.
My advisor has already used Moodle and other systems.
Lets see how it goes.
Re: Joomla
Joomla is a Content Management System on the web. It is the application that can be shared and managed by the group of people. In the early days of the web, Content Management System means managing the work under one roof and then sharing with the rest of the group of authorized people, affiliated companies and so forth. Now this has gone very large and thousands of people will have to share their work in a speedy manner. The old style of transmitting the information to the Content Management and publishing departments was loosing its effectiveness.
Now with the live Content Management System development, publishing work and presenting the whole world is very speedy and that is the only reason for the big companies to jump into this.
I am not sure what course you are taking, is it part of your university courses, i think you can learn this by your own in few day. If it is part of your course as it mentioned in your previous post then courses should be on other applications of Content Management System that Microsoft, Oracle and several other companies develop because those applications are being used for big corporations to manage the content.
If you have to learn Joomla then I would suggest register with one or the other domain name with the hosting company who offers Joomla in their services, that way you can learn fast and will have hands on experience.
In the next 10 years this style of content management will increase dramatically and early adoption of the system will guaranty greater earnings.
Re: Joomla
mubeens so which hosting companies would you recommend?
Re: Joomla
I am not sure your location (money matters) but I guess you can search host companies from any location if you wish. I am not the host company but rather I provide hosting service to selective corporate accounts. I have rented and placed within my web servers from two three companies. On one server, client has access only through ftp and rest I control. On the other server, I can create the account and client has all the access. My server (spaces) packages have CMS, BB's and other common features that clients normally require plus you can add yours extra if they are within the guidelines. The start up cost for testing site that includes few hundred MB's of space will cost about two to three hundred dollars yearly plus SC. I run radio stations on the web for my client too and obviously it requires bit more resources from the server. I have some sites spaces that are used by companies internally and it is not accessible for the outside world. I had setup two radio stations for one company in two different cities. They have several resources linked and shared through the T1 lines from local communication company and can run the radio operations smoothly. These operations require only authorized acess.
When choosing the web service provider, you need to make sure their up time, space and features that include with the package. Also you need to know which server software they use because some are user friendly than others.
Re: Joomla
mubeens

Re: Joomla
Great thread, I was a mambo programmer long way back.. even when Joomla didn't came into existence (Joomla is a fork of mambo project).
Let me put in straight:
Joomla is CMS (Content Management System) features like User registration, Content/Article Management is built in. So its out of the box Blogging platform or a small scale website.
Then their is extensions they are small program which run within the Joomla. Thousand of extensions are available ranging from simple guest book, forums to CRM, video systems. Some of them are free, some or not.
Any host which support PHP/MYSQL/Apache is fine for general Joomla Uses. Rest assured you will have great platform with frequent updates and can be extensible easily !
Re: Joomla
This thread should be in Computer & Infotech !
As some one already mentioned that Joomla! started as a fork from Mambo in 2005, when many of the original developers of the Mambo CMS moved to working on Joomla!
Since then it has rapidly grown in popularity and, comes up as a "Cutting Edge Content Management System and one of the most powerful Open Source Content Management systems .
The good thing is , it can be used for anything from simple homepages to complicated corporate websites. Quite easy to install, easy to manage and very reliable.
Joomla has a powerful, extensible template system , which can deal many different data types and control of user access, approval of content, scheduling of content display, and rich administrative controls are all included.
If one has to run it as a course , the course should cover the areas regarding the Concepts, and Deliberations of Content Management System (CMS) , a Quick Glance into History .
Structure of a Web Content Management System (WCMS), Access Rights , Content , Extensions , Components and Configuration Settings.
The course should cover the basic Overhaul of the Joomla! Framework , XML Remote Procedure Call Support , its Support of Several Databases and Search Engine Friendliness
The course should also go through the Installation , specially the Installation on a Virtual Server
some companies that provide Joomla hosting service
The Experts in Joomla Hosting at Joomla Hosting Directory!
in the list some companies provide unlimited space and unlimited traffic. The only thing is they all oversell to make more money and you can only find out this with your experience or once you choose the host company then searching for reviews on that company.
